I am doing a 50 km charity ride here in Toronto in two weeks. I commute to work each day approx., 7 km each way. I am curious about foods I should be eating and avoiding in the days leading up to the ride, as well as well as what is a better source of rehydration water or sports drinks (poweraid etc.) Also would carrying a couple of energy bars be a wise idea. Because I only decided to do this ride today, my training as it may be, has been limited. Outside of my commute I was thinking of riding an additional 10 km a day to help me adjust to a 50 km ride. Thanks in advance for replies, and any other info that you feel is important is welcome.

50 km is not a long ride. Unless you have hypoglycemia or a similar situation, this should not be a major problem. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about food, etc. Might throw in a banana and some Grandma's cookies or a power bar or something similar.

A bottle of water and a bottle of gatorade would be fine. Drink some of both.

Yes, ride an additional 10-20 km per day, and do at least one 40-50 km ride ahead of time. With your daily base, you should be able to do a 25-30 km ride right off.

Have fun.
