Any suggestions?

Thanks

MI is a pretty big place. Got any specific areas you are thinking of? What kind of riding do you plan to do? Traverse City, Petoskey, Mackinac, Grayling, Alpena, Marquette...Tons of great riding in MI. Lots of places for fishing.

Michigan's State Motto:

"Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice"

"If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you."

I'm a Michigan native and before moving to Boston on a cross country bike ride starting in Los Angeles, my wife and I toured in Michigan. I think tourism is the second or so biggest industy in the state, and it indeed is a sportsman's paradise. We were campers at that time, and we planned our trips around the state park system, mostly in the Southeastern part, the most urban, centered around Detroit and Ann Arbor (a premier college town).

A really nice trip was at the tip of the lower peninsula from the Lake Huron to Lake Michigan sides, starting at Cheboygan to Mackinac at the tip, over to Traverse City and back to Cheboygan. I spent a month in the Upper Peninsula, and that is pretty rural. The Deparment of Natural Resources has a nice website with details of the State Parks:

Feel free to PM me with any questions; Michiganians are imbued with Midwestern sensibility and friendliness.

Look at the top left corner of the lower peninsula. Traverse city to Petoskey is without a doubt the best cycling in the state for both road or mountain bikes. As far as fishing there are lakes everywhere in Michigan and most have good fishing.

If you come to Boyne City I can point you in a direction for both.

Visited MI last summer and rode in the "One Helluva Ride". Aside from the downpour, I really enjoyed the ride.

Hey Bone Head, I was there too. I forgot about all the rain we had. But it was a good ride!

Awesome scenery.. I'd head to the west coast about Holland or South Haven.. Next best biking friendly areas would be about the Leelanau Peninsula near Traverse City or The Houghton area in the Upper Peninsula. ( Don't forget to ride the Brockway Mtn. Drive.) Highest road between New York and South Dakota.. . A ride I've always wanted to complete. The area about Lumberman's Monument near Tawas north of Bay City.

Camping, golfing, biking, and fishing in MI are all amazing. You definitely have to go up north though. Go to the Traverse City area like some of the posters above stated. It's quite beautiful. You can always go for a day on Mackinac Island as well. Enjoy your time there!

THE BEST MTB is in the Upper Peninsula. Its kept secret because we don't want you guys comming up here and skidding up our trails. Road biking is ok. There's not too many roads but there's no traffic either. The fishing is absolutley rotten here. I haven't ever seen a fish except once at Walmart. (an even better kept secret.....)

That sounds like the UP is the place. Sorry to hear that there is a Wal Mart there though.
