Hi,

I am a long-time mountain biker with previous road (touring) bike experience. Recently told that I can no longer run for exercise and I want to spend more time riding on road, but also want ability to ride on trails and tow kids in a trailer. Not looking to race.

I have been looking at 3 bikes and welcome feedback. My Max price is $2000.
1) Trek XO1
2) Cannondale CX9
3) Specialized Tricross Sport

Any feedback welcome. Thanks.

Welcome Snilson,

My answer is gonna sound a lot like a "non-answer", but I think I'm beating a lot of my fellow BF'ers to the punch when I say this:

Ride all three - and then pick the one that fits/feels the best.

You're experienced enough to know what you need, and you've chosen an appropriate type of bike for the task. Each of those rigs is well thought of and well-known. Prices and spec are all in the same realm of the bike universe...

Thus, it comes down to what YOU like best.

Happy hunting,

DWR

$2000 will buy you a good cross well specked out. I was looking for a long time and looked the bikes you mentioned. I ended up with the Rocky Mountain Solo CXR.

I was looking for a while as well, and just settled on the Lemond Poprad. because of Lemond's falling out with Trek, Trek is discounting these bikes pretty well, but still warranteeing them. i picked mine up this week for $1100. full 105, carbon fork, disc brakes, ox-platinum steel.

For towing kids in a trailer get a bike with triple chainrings.

I am a mountain biker who also owns a road bike. Today, I ordered a Salsa La Cruz from my LBS. Why you ask? Why not, I say.

as an update- i took my bike on it's first real ride today. i have been riding bikes since 4 years old, and i have never ridden a bike so suited to my style of riding. my Propad is light, extremely comfortable, and fast. it has an awesome feel (steel), and i could not be pleased more with this bike. i went with it over the Salsa La Cruz because of the Propad's traditional geometry.
Obviously, you need to ride whatever bike you buy first. but you honestly should consider the Propad. it is the best riding bike i've ever had, and it cost me 1/3 of my mountain bike.
i talked to my trek store today, and they have 3 55's and 2 57's left. the propad runs big, so you would size down from what you typically ride. why do i include this? they are no longer in production, so get 'em while you can!
