I wonder why he was wearing a mouth guard in addition to a helmet...

The mouth guard is to keep his brain from falling out in accidents like that. He's got that whole BB in a box car thing going on there.

And I like how the article ends with this...

Last June in Kennebunkport, the president fell while riding a "Segway Human Transporter."

And Kerry fell last week. Is this election going to come down to a comparison of who's got the best bike handling skills?

A mouth guard???? Who has ever worn a mouth guard for a bike ride???

Sounds fishy to me.

I think Bush and Kerry should race a sprint to the Washington city limits and the winner gets president. Sure, why not.

Better to wear a mouth guard and to be safe then to be at a public speaking with his two front teeth knocked out. Not good when it comes time for that photo with the king of Jordan, or Englands PM Tony Blair etc. Naw just not a good look.

I bet the Pres read all the posts regarding Kerry's riding skills on this board. He couldn't be outdone but should have remembered the Segway incident... This time no bush seemed to be there to prevent scratches. At least Bush is now acknowledging the recent polls... tumbling!!!

I just emailed CNN to ask if the mouthguard thing was a misunderstanding between the spokesman and reporter or if it was not, why was Bush wearing a mouthguard.

Let's see if they answer.

He should've worn a full faced helmet along with full padding on the body. I know it sounds excessive but he's not the best mountain biker in the world and he is the president of the USA afterall.

Heres a photo of Kerry on his bike, when I zoomed the photo it looked like a Serrotta head badge, and he has his name on the down tube. Can any one find one of Bush on his?

To allay any fears from the public about a possible pretzel danger.

LOL I remember friends of mine were mailing bags of pretzels to the white house with a get well card in the box.

I'm pretty sure Kerry requires a helmet strap extension to get it around that head!

At least Bush rides over challenging terrain, in Texas heat. I'm sure Kerry would rather stick with nice, paved, smooth roads! Wuss. :-)

It looks to me that he should be glad he was wearing a mouthguard.

Last I knew, bike helmets were designed to save LIVES, not teeth...

Imagine if Kerry scraped his giant face. There would be enough skin on the trail to create a hazard!

Or would there be... I can't decide....... and I bet he couldn't either!!!

His skin could be torn off but his bionetic advanced titanium beryllium carbide endoskeleton will heal and he will prevail as long as his two fusion packs don't rupture.

I don't think we was. You can't breath through them.

I think they say he was to make it look like he was taking all precautions to not being reckless and I think it's quite likely the helmet falls into that area as well.

It's spin.

I'd like to proven wrong just to see someone being able to breath riding around with a mouthgaurd in.

I think I would be able to breath with a mouthguard. I've used them in different sports. Now, I'm not an "extreme" rider, and will never be, but I bet the president isn't either. He probably was just taking a break from his jogging routine and decided to ride a while. Who knows, who cares. He's doing fine. I'm doing fine. It's really none of my business what he was wearing.

Take care,

In all fairness, it's easier to skin yourself up offroad than onroad. Though, I'm still stumped as to why the man wasn't wearing gloves (he skinned up his palms).

It would be better if he kept the mouthguard in for speaking. Mumbling would be preferable to the things that come out of that mans mouth ;-)

The worst is often brought out in people when others have an accident. Just a few short weeks after he fell of his bicycle and blamed the Secret Service, John Kerry snidely remarked to the press upon hearing of the President's accident, "Did the training wheels fall off?" He quickly said "That's off the record."

Kerry wants nothing more in the world than to be President, yet his words show him to be a snide, mean, vindictive person without regard for anyone other than himself. I think even the Democrat Party could do better. Why can't they see that the man who could be President, who could get cross-over votes - much like the vaunted Reagan Democrats - is Joe Lieberman?
