View Full Version : Not a fun commute this morning

I check the local news at 5am this morning and they show a clear weather radar for the south bay. So I decide to ride to work today (fremont -> sunnyvale). As soon I hit Milpitas, it starts to rain. Oh well, it was light and only lasted ~15 minutes. I keep riding and as I enter Sunnyvale, I get a flat in the rear tire. Changing a flat with everything wet and dirty, is not much fun.

The ride wasn't ideal but it did feel good to be out riding.

Anyone else ride to work today?

Dear BF

Is that what that was this AM? The ground was all shinny and wet and when I looked up I got water in my eyes.

I commute by bike to and from caltrain 5 days a week, rain or shine. Luckily my rides are short. But I find it kind of cool to arrive at work in the middle of pouring rain. Co-workers always look at you like you're nuts. ;)

If I didn't have to get my kids to school, I'd commute rain or shine like I did three years ago. I feel like I'm a bit of an eco-terrorist for driving such a short distance.

nah, not really.. Just dress for it, and use fenders.

I did arrive at work one time in pouring rain, mud on my face and steam escaping from my well-vented helmet. My co-workers gawked and oohed about my hardcore bad-ass.

The manliness meter went down though soon after I showered and settled in front of my computer. The manliness meter bottomed out as the day progressed to the afternoon when I started contemplating riding in the rain, cold, and dark.

I commute 16 miles each way in the Monterey Bay area, rain or shine. However, this week is my recovery week from a half iron triathlon last weekend, so I joyfully turned on the windshield wipers in my car as I drove in yesterday...

I just installed a new cassette and chain last night. Sooo clean and shiny! I couldn't stand the thought of riding through even so much as a puddle this morning and so I drove:innocent:

But I did recently get a flat on the back during a commute on wet roads. Nasty stuff!

I never drive a car to work, no matter how hard it rains. I always take two wheels.

However, 99% of the time this is my two wheeled rain commute vehicle, it even has ABS brakes:D

I did ride today (Sunnyvale-Stanford)... but leaving the house at 8, I missed all of the rain. Maybe a few drops once I got on-campus, but by that time I didn't care.

Same here. I gave away my car, so I have no choice. ;)

The traffic is pretty bad... I enjoy riding my bike, or taking the train (and eating/reading/internet/napping) over sitting in traffic.

Barely missed the rain, so it turned out to be a nice 15 mile ride, despite the headwind.

Oh geez, my buddy just had his VFR in the shop for a month trying to get an ABS controller problem sorted out.. every time they plugged in a new computer, it went up in smoke.. doh.

Fortunately it doesn't seem to be a remotely common problem, his is the first anyone has heard of...

I too usually commute in the rain on two wheels, my Duc doesn't mind too much (apart from getting filthy in the wintertime).

My commute this morning was rather nice. It was a little on the chilly side but the roads were mostly dry and the sky was interesting. But the best part was that in 25 miles I only hit two red lights. And I only had to unclip for one of those since I leaned against a traffic light pole for the other :thumb:

I thought you usually commuted by airplane (with Birdy folder in luggage)

Two or three times a week I commute from Redwood City to Cupertino. Before daylight savings time, getting a flat on the ride home in the dark sucks. I have a very bright bike light but when there is no street lights, it makes it difficult.

Get a helmet light as well as a handlebar light. Then you see whats in front of you as well as what you are looking at. And, if you have to change a tire in the dark, a helmet light is awesome. I speak from personal experience here....

True, that's probably my most frequent commute! :p
