Mountain Biking - Presidential "Yard Sale"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Check this out. Apparantly the president took a spill on his mountain bike. He was riding on his "ranch" in Crawford Texas.

More detail on CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/05/22/bush.fall/)
I'm really curious to see what his trails are like. That area is pretty flat and "shrubby". I don't see singletrack in my mind. I see something akin to double-track dirt rodes cut through flat scrubland with Hummers.
I WOULD like to see what the president rides. I would also like to see what his rig is like. Does he ride a "comfort" bike. Or is he riding a high-tech full-suspension bike. Is it more difficult to drive than the Segway Transport he wiped out on last year?????

That's the first thing I wondered when I heard the story

Here is another take for Reuters.
Downhill mud (http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&storyID=5226463)
Apparantly, Prez caught some mud at the bottom of a downhill. Doubtless a creek bed that's typically dry. Of course, this could just be spin from Karl Rove after realizing that being tripped up by a rock would make the president look like a real "Barney".
The president has a pretty long course at 17-miles. I hope it's a nice loop.

Whats cool is that his injuries were brushed off and he got right back on the bike and finished the ride.

What confuses me is the "mouth guard". Do any of you use a mouth guard? I used to use a "Joffa" when I raced BMX (back in the day!), but don't currently. Unless he was riding with a full faced helmet. In which case, I like him more and more!
I don't know too many people who ride a comfort bike with a full-faced helmet. He probably has a tricked out full squish light weight XC bike. I know he's an avid runner and his body guards have to be in great shape! I think he runs everyday.

I wouldn't be surprised if his press advisor or somebody makes him wear a mouthguard or a full-face. Imagine having a president who was missing half their teeth!
I'm kind of curious now...big cudos to the first person who can find out what kind of bike (or bikes) G.W. rides. Or if you prefer, what does Kerry ride?

I have never used a mouth guard before didn't see the point, when i use to race NBL back in the day with a full face helemt, didn't see the point in a mouth guard.

he's a very good runner. he's in the top 1 and a half percent in his age class in the country or sumthing like that. does like 3 miles in under 21 min easily
Our shop in TX may or may not have serviced a very new Fuel 90 with platforms that was dropped off by a gov. vehicle... I'm 90% sure it was his since the patrol guys all ride really old low end Trek's, and there was only one Fuel.
Hope its ok to say this though I can't see why it wouldn't be...

Update.
Apparantly, the president doesn't wear gloves while cycling. Check out this picture after the face-plant:
http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/nm/20040523/mdf575007.jpg
From this photo, you can clearly see a bandaged right palm. If he wore gloves, he wouldn't have sinned the palm.
I'm sure there are two things we ALWAYS wear while cycling. A helmet, and gloves. Who rides without gloves?????? But he rides WITH a mouthguard????????
Or if you prefer, what does Kerry ride?
Kerry rides a Serotta. I heard he owns several of them... or at least his family does. ;) I understand that former president Carter rides a Rivendell.
What confuses me is the "mouth guard". Do any of you use a mouth guard?
I'm sure the mouth guard is to prevent accidental exposure to the high amounts of killer pretzels on the trails.

Another update ...
Apparantly, it hasn't rained in Crawford for the last week. Check this out from Weather Channel.
Last weeks precipitation in Crawford Texas (http://www.weather.com/activities/other/other/weather/yesterday.html?locid=USTX0307)
So the story about hitting "loose soil from rain" is apparantly a lie.
12mi from Crawford the first NORBA race of the season was hosted, and ALL riders, pro and amateur were astounded at the technical climbs with over 1,000ft of climbing in each 7mi loop. I have been out to the ranch and the terrain is very rocky with some hills, lots of creeks and creekbeds, etc.
Something to consider is just because the soil was loose from rain, doesn't necessarily mean the rain was this week. Like I said, there are a lot of creekbeds out there.
If you check my above post he's probably on a Fuel 90.
Perhaps he crashed on the now infamous "creek bed of mass destruction"? :D

Here are some photos of the Bush Ranch. Looks like flat ground to me.

My first guess was a Fuel 100. I imagine the Lance Armstrong association sells the brand to a lot of the celebrity types. I guess even the president could have misgivings about dropping the $4500 for a 100 though.

I'm not trying to "mess with Texas". I'm just pointing out the photographs of the Bush Ranch. It's perfectly possible to be on a Plateau within a hilly region.
Since you're there, would you like to bike over to the President's ranch and scope it out for us. Tell us how hilly it is????

Like I said, one of the routes we ride goes RIGHT NEXT to the ranch... if SS isn't there we can go right up to it basically. Even if they are you can still see it from the road. Its on a long slow hill, and there are many ravines, creeks etc in that area.

well on august 13th of 2003, this was said...
"We invited Bush on a mountain bike ride," said Peter Heumann, promoter of the Southern California Bicycle Expo and member of the Concerned Off Road Bicyclists Association (CORBA). "He said it's something he's never done but would like to try."
so aperently whatever he is riding he has been riding it for less than a year.

I saw him on tv last night .he looked no worse for wear except for the occasional far away ,that was a cool wreck, wish I was there and not here, bike riding is so much better than giving speeches smirk he sometimes gets.or am I reading too much into the smirk?
My respect for Bush just shot off tenfold (but that's not to hard when his respect level is at about zero). If he is on a Fuel 90, I ride the same bike as him.
If it didn't rain much in the week before, it is possible that the mud he hit was from a creek that dried up do to the lack of rain. So it is not necessarily a lie.

Who rides without gloves??????
Umm is it bad to ride without gloves? I do it often when I just want to grab my bike and go quickly. So I hit my hand on a tree, so what?
