Anyone on here with a DWI or DUI using a electric bike to get around?:thumb:

I'm thinking about it but don't know if [the police] will give me problems if they stop me. :notamused:

What are your local laws regarding electric bikes?

Get a nice bike.
Install an electric hub motor on the rear wheel.
Get a bike rack on the back.
Get some pannier bags to hide the electric hub.
I'm sure the police won't give you a second glance...
as long as you don't drink and pedal.

I have a DUI and have done tons of research if we can legally ride one of these's bikes and im about 90% sure that we can! So i bought one and thats how im getting around:giver: but i would do exactly what the person said above me keep your bike as down low as you can and carry the laws of an ebike around with u.

90% ? I was hopping for 100%

Thanks for the replies. I will do my own research and look into the laws better. I'm just trying to get to work and back which is about 27 miles both ways.

Can you use a bus or train to commute part of the way?

No one will be able to give you close to 100% assurance without knowing your location. State laws vary in regard to how electric bikes are treated.

From what I've found out, an e-bike that is under 1hp or 750w & has a top speed of under 20mph is essentially a bicycle & follows those laws. However as already stated the laws vary from place to place.

I think that ive done the most research on this subject, and itt will all come down to the state laws and how they treat these e-bikes. The federal law that supersedes state laws are for safety eqiupment regulations that the manufacturer of these e-bikes have to follow. So that been said there are wonderful cities than have already passed laws that e-bikes should follow the laws of the states bike policies. But there are states like New york and Hawaii where they are totally illegal and u cant ride themm. Then they are the states that havent addressed the issue so most likely u could win that in court using the federal law that states these are "bicycles". I would check with your registry to make sure and avoid asking a cop cuz they will just tell u that ur not allowed to drive anything that has a motor.

I used to live in S.C., & mopeds were used by those who lost their driver's license from a D.U.I. At that time, you didn't need a license or insurance to ride a moped. Mopeds were nicknamed, " Likker-sikkles !"
