Hi,

I'm thinking about building my first set of wheels and was after a little advice. I'll be doing a two-part course at my local bike community centre to learn the basics but after that I'll probably build a 'real' set for my Fuji.

I'm after something that'll be strong enough to survive my daily commute in downtown Toronto (bumpy roads, streetcar tracks, potholes etc) but they also have to add some bling to my otherwise drab bike.

I'm thinking red Deep Vs for the rims (standard, I know) and a matching set of red hubs with black spokes, but it doesn't seem like there's a lot of options out there for hubs in red - so far I've only found:
- Dimension
- Milwalkee Hubs
- All-city

Does anyone have any experience/suggestions with these, or other, red hubs?

There's a thread around here titled "the truth about hubs" or something like that which is pretty good. Basically those brands you're listing (plus a ton of others) are all either rebranded Formula or Dimension. I'd go with the Milwaukees cuz they have that little beer mug on them. Whee.

You forgot one option, which are the best - phil wood custom ano'ed in red. Those hubs will last you a lifetime, if you can afford it.

If you want bling that not everyone has, you should order some red spoke nipples. It's about $16 for a box I think. A lot to pay for nipples, but a small price to pay for cool.

true, stick with brass...at least for drive side b/c of the extra amount of force

Yeah, I'd stick with brass nipples.
But +1 to the red IRO hubs.
