Just found a small crack under the bottom bracket of my 1999 Specialized Allez Comp.

I assume this means it's all over?

Are they repairable?

not repairable. you might be able to send it back for warranty. check with your lbs and specialized.

from what i understand ... specializeds have a lifetime warrenty, and therefore you bike will either be replaced or repaired for free (more or less) . bring the bike to your lbs and have them help you out

I bought the frame 2nd hand from a private seller; do I need a receipt?

Specialized is great about warranty frames so bring it in and get it warrantied... few of my friends have even had their frames upgraded a few levels for free...

More and more manufacturers are asking the owner where he bought the frame/bike from along with the serial number. They can then usually tell if the frame is second hand. The frame has a warrenty for the original owner......

I know this has absolutely no bearing on the problem either way, but: what's the orientation of the crack? Front of bike to back? One side to the other?

Just curiosity :) It'll make no difference to repairability (ie. you still won't be able to fix it) or warranty issues (it still shouldn't crack, it's still second-user.)

The crack is ~1/2 inch long right at the bottom of the bottom bracket, starting from the right edge and moving directly toward the center. I saw a suspicious squiggly crack in the paint, and sure enough, after sanding the area, there it was.

Hope it didn't have anything to do with over-tightening the BB.

IIRC, one year of the Epics (carbon fibre, made by Giant) needed an upgraded BB the next year due to failures.

If your bike is of that year I doubt you'll have much problems with a warranty replacement as it's a known problem.

Just in case the weight-weanies wanna know, after pulling the bike to bits, I weighed the frame and it was 1727g or 3.8lbs, frame only (57cm, non-sloping top tube), :D
