Coming home tonight, about dusk, I came around a corner and there he was... a cat that probably stood about knee-high, tiger-stripped, long tail and back legs longer than front.

I think he got caught in my headlight and I almost hit him when I honked my airhorn and he ran off. What a shocker!

Sounds like a Texas Bobcat. I saw one yesterday crossing the MUP in South Arlington (Fish Creek Trail). It was about 3-3 1/2 feet long. I would guesstimate 35-40 pounds. BIG bobcat. Most of them have short (like bobbed) tails...hence the name. They can be either spotted or striped...
Beautiful animals, but they will predate pets...

I've seen a couple of bobcats lately, but a couple friends of mine were saying last weekend that folks have spotted jaguarundi in the area, too.

I've run into bobcats, armadillos and other fun animals at River Legacy. I try to take pictures if possible.

River Legacy makes sense, as there is so much (undeveloped and undevelopeable) land in the river bottom. Where I saw this was in a narrow linear park along Fish Creek in South Arlington. Between New York and Collins. Lots and lots of houses...guess we are encroaching on their hunting grrounds.

one day, I was riding around wrl and on the part of the trail that runs along the west side of the lake (the newest addition to the bike trail- runs near the old water plant) I saw a 3ft. long "coral snake" slither right in front of me, then disappear. I was so freaked out that I didn't notice what pattern the colors ran in. Might have just been a corn snake or whatever.
2 days later, me and a buddy are on the same section of the trail- I'm actually telling him the story about the snake- when a coyote walk out of the brush about 50yards ahead of us, walks towards us a little bit, then slowly makes its way to the other side of the trail and disappears back into the brush. There's some weird ***** out there.
Remember, the animals were here first. We took the land from them. They're running out of places to go and hide.

This was on the trails at Grapevine lake. I was taking the back way home to get a few extra miles. :) I've seen deer and coyotes, loads of rabbits, mice, and snakes but never a cat like this one. It did look like a bobcat, but it was stripped. I thought they only "came" in spots?

I saw a huge cat at River Legacy tonight. It was about 6:30 when I saw it lazily cross the trail about 50 yards in front of me. It glanced in my direction, but didn't care that I was there.

It was about the size of a doberman. Tall and lean. Its ears were laid back and it didn't have the face of a bobcat. Its hair was very short and VERY dark.

I stopped and watched it through the trees for a little bit. I caught a glimpse of its tail, which was short and spotted like a bobcat's, but it was taller and leaner, with less hair around its face than I've seen on a bobcat. It looked too dark to be a mountain lion.

Any ideas what it was?

I found it!! It's called a melanistic bobcat. It's supposed to be very rare.
