Sugino Mighty Tour cranks, 42/48 rings, IIRC. Some idiot scratched his name and social # into the right arm. Same on the left, minus the social #. Comes with BB spindle, no cups. $30:

now if thats not asking for identity theft!

They are nice cranks, though. Whats the BCD and arm length? How bad is it scratched in, I'd like to see that, wonder if it could be sanded out?

I've also got a Viscount here that I'm reluctant to part with due to the same "identification" method scratched into it. Not the same bike or ex-owner either.

110/170. Doubt if you could sand them out, even if you Dobbinized the anodized finish. I PSP'ed a few of the numbers just in case - those four are no better/worse then the others:

Hey, those probably belonged to Rangers/Athletics/Yankees slugger Rubén Sierra!

I'm making a formal offer to buy that crankset at the asked price.

Me and Ruben are tight - like an English cup in an Italian bottom bracket. :p

Whatta you guys think? A bit of polishing, a judicious application of some JB weld, and a little more polishing?

Hey, the JB Weld would then let you have a copper colored name and ssn!

Nah, John, just change your name to R. Sierra!

That's what I was thinking, and it makes sense. When he was with the A's, Tony LaRussa refered to him as "the village idiot"

Might be a little piece of history. :) He could run and hit though. :p

He was a great asset to my home town team, so I don't care what LaRussa thought of him.

Ok, Zorro - those cranks will now cost you $250.

:p

I'll pack your crankset + spindle up and get your after dinner. Ditto for Charles' RD.

I just checked the SSN numbering scheme, and 58X could have been Florida, or Puerto Rico depending on the third digit (also MS, NM or Pacific Islands). So Rubén Sierra is still a possibility.

That's quite interesting - it's a Puerto Rico 584. Just read up about the SSN scheme and revised the pic for additional safety.

P.S.:

Ruben Angel Sierra Garcia (El Caballo)

6' 1" on a 57cm? Forget it. Not even with that long stem.

The best thing about that rear derailleur is you can install the chain without taking anything apart. No removing a jockey wheel or taking apart the chain, just easy like pie.

:eek::eek::eek:

:o

I forgot all about it - I remember you had asked me if I was willing to part with them ages ago.

Mind you, the sidepulls are run-of-the-mill Weinmanns, but the levers do have hoods on them:

PM me again (I won't forget this time!) and let me know what you wish off of it. The bars and stem are the originals, incidentally.

Suntour racheting downtube levers, awful-looking Shimano Titlist FD, and a Shimano Crane short-cage RD.

More junk:

Raleigh USA crankset (rebadged SR), 144 BCD. Has left arm. $15 + shipping

SOLD Raleigh USA triple crankset (rebadged SR), 110 BCD on the outer rings, don't remember what the inner is. Has left arm. $25 + shipping

Pair of Dia-Compe gum hoods, soft but a bit grimy, one small tear, a bit deformed from being mounted on Campy levers - $10.

Scratched-up, but usable Dura-Ace 7800 bottom bracket, Italian thread. (PHOTO SHOWN OF ENGLISH-THREAD VERSION IN BETTER COSMETIC SHAPE THEN THE ONE AVAILABLE - for reference only). $20

One REG lever cover in red - $10. Better yet, sell me a match so I can use it on my Schwinn Paramount.

Some kind of Sugino spindle that has its own wild taper, much larger then JIS. If you need it, you know what it is. $10:

Shimano Ultegra crankset w/no BB, Octalink. Got them in a trade, but the BB was bad. Don't know what to do with them. $20 OBO.

You can change it out, but there's no way to avoid breaking the chain to install one - unless you can form an opening in the chainstay. :D

Are the Sugino cranks still available? I'm not sure whether the <SOLD> refers to them or something that was inbetween items.

The "SOLD" was in reference to this crankset. USAZorro picked them up.

now if thats not asking for identity theft!
Many US local police departments and a few other civic groups used to recommend this method of theftproofing bikes/bikeparts in the 70's, when identity theft wasn't even a glimmer in your local organized crime syndicate's eye, but bike theft/instant disassembly was at the top of every crackhead's (and they were EVERYWHERE) list of HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEXT SCORE. So, yes, some frames and components of that era were ID'd in this ugly, permanent and now-unadvisable way, but OTOH one could be somewhat more reassured that your bike or its bits would all still be there when you came out of the store if they were ID'd thusly. So to call it idiocy is perhaps a bit too strong and revisionist a term.

Hey Kurt,

I'm looking for a replacement fork for an old Lambert. I noticed that the Viscount you pictured appears to have a steel fork. Any chance you would sell that?

Kurt, I might be interested in the Ultegra cranks. What's the length, and are they double or triple?

Thanks

Steve, that fork was a 27" replacement, while the Viscount is supposed to be 700C. The combination was not all that pleasing, and there is a small reverse bend on the blades that I have to straighten as well.

If you don't mind a considerable expense, I'd suggest one of Soma's lugged, chrome Tange forks.

Thanks for the reply, Kurt.

I thought the fork might be bent, but it was hard to tell in the picture.

I'm rebuilding the Lambert I bought in the early 70's just for fun, and I plan replacing the "Death Fork". I missed the recall, which might not have applied to Lamberts, anyway. I need a 27" fork, so that really limits the options. I have found one source of a 27" chrome fork and several sources of black painted 27" forks. I'll just pick up one of those.
