Hi, I'd like to hear from anyone who has ridden from Nice airport, westward to Toulon or Bandol (en route to Marseilles in other words). It looks about 175 kms long, but what are traffic and road conditions like? English, French or German reply is fine, thank you.

The closest I have been to your route was riding to La Ciotat from Marseille, the roads were smooth with an area to the side of the road reserved for cyclists. Looking at street view on google it looks easy going to Frejus, good luck with the ride!

What time of year are you planning to do it? We drove along a lot of that coast last year at the end of October, and the cycling would have been great then. However, I would imagine that in the middle of summer the tourist traffic makes it a lot less pleasant.

Thanks for the reply! I hope next spring - couldn't this year but started thinking about it...Will avoid summer. Did you see bikers on the car lanes on the coastal roads, or did they have paved shoulders they could use? I am terrified of trucks. What stretches did you drive (I understood you went by car).
(FYI there's what appears to be a beautiful youth hostel (International hostelling member) in Cassis, but out of the way - and they have no internet connection so book by phone or ordinary letter. )

We did most of the coastal roads between Toulon and Menton over about three days. There generally wasn't any painted or separated bike lanes except for near the bigger towns (e.g., Nice). However, the roads are not overly narrow - I would have felt comfortable riding on them, and we saw quite a few cyclists there. Most of the trucks use the nearby motorway, but of course there will still be some local ones. I think that most of the traffic was private vehicles.
