This is why bicycles are great...

You can walk them. Which I have done countless times after getting just drunk enough that walking is an issue. The bikes lends to some stability :)

That being said, i have ridden 4-5 mile trips home from friends houses a couple dozen times after a few beers with no issue. I actually find it to be very sobering. Do I advocate drinking and riding? ...kind of. 200lbs of me smashing into some idiot who is walking in the bike lane going 10mph is a far better option then smashing into the same idiot in a 3000lbs vehicle going 50. Simple enough.

More interesting is that other studies based on the same data have shown that more than 95% of these cyclists were male and riding without a helmet.

I've been guilty of riding under the influence, but I tend to go slow and walk it when theres any significant traffic... and I rarely go far from my own neighborhood when I'm on a bike and I know 'm gonna have a few.

I can totally understand the helmet discrepancy though. I know helmets are a good thing and save lives, but speaking for myself, most of the time I'm riding in heavy traffic and I need my hearing. I know the really good helmets aren't supposed to affect/reduce hearing or vision, but it does for me. Or at least it throws me off enough that I don't feel comfortable or as safe wearing one in the city.

Just my $.02

I once ran a few miles with a friend while being drunk for no apparent reason... it was like : hey you know we drank like a lot of useless calories...
-yeah ya rite let's burn that
*starts running*
good thing is that running wasn't tiring at all and amazingly fun xD

though I never thought of doing so on my bike since I never happened to drink and ride my bike on the same day.

I'm a zero tolerance guy when it comes to drinking and driving. There is simply no such thing as 'okay to drive' once you've started drinking, especially when you consider that one of the things that alcohol affects most profoundly is our ability to judge our own capabilities.

On a bike though, I don't have a problem with someone having a drink or two. I have found out firsthand that there is such a thing as too drunk to ride, though. July 4th of last year, as a matter of fact. After a certain point risk management does go straight to hell, and as another poster mentioned, you end up thinking you're an NYC messenger but without all the skill and experience.

I don't drink but even if I did I would never drink and ride. Hell I just about fall off my bike riding sober, no way I could do it with a few drinks in me.
