Introductions - Aging Newbie from SE Mississippi

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Greetings from SE Mississippi! I have recently relocated from Naples, Florida. I think my husband and I are doing that "midlife search for significance" thing. We decided to leave a medical practice of 23 years in ultra affluent Naples and head for rural Mississippi to an area in desperate need of good family medical care. I was a casual road cyclist in FL., putting in 10-15 miles 4 days a week with 20-60mile runs on most weekends. It was weenie cycling--no hills, just flat, smooth asphalt. Now I am in MS and suddenly the old dream of my 20's is back. I want to do some serious bicycle touring. In 3 years I will be 50 years old and I want to do the Northern Tier ride for my 50th. For the past 18 years I have been raising kids, homeschooling them and helping out in my husband's medical practice. Now the oldest is headed off to college and it's time to do something for myself. I've got a second wind and I'm ready to tackle some serious touring. My husband, though not a cyclist, is my cheerleader.
I have a new Trek 520 and lots of info from these boards. Now all I need is training, inspiration, more info, time and guts.
Ciao!

I am coming to visit family in Mississippi from Colorado. I was wondering if you have any good routes that I could ride. If you know any we will be staying in Hattisburg just South of Jackson. Mountain Bike or Road love them both. Thanks.

Hi secondwind! Welcome to the forum. @ "aging newbie".....I have you beat by several years, you little youngster! Glad to see more gals here too. Send a private message to donnamb and she'll get you access to the "women only" part of the forum. And any time you need advice on climbing hills, or just some commiseration, this New Englander is happy to sympathize! :o
Edited: Oh gosh, I just noticed that this original post is 4 years old!!!!
