the head snapped off my handlebar binder bolt while tightening down the other day.

it's a mid-80's pinarello-pantographed 3TTT track stem and uses a 6mm bolt of some sort, but after trying several hardware stores and 3 bike shops, i'm unable to locate a replacement.

several had potential candidates, but they were either too short or the threading was wrong or something.

why is this so hard? am i just having bad luck?

Try going to an auto parts store. Or give this place a try once you know the exact size and thread pitch: http://www.metricmcc.com/

You might try finding a bike shop that has been in business for 25 years. I have been in old shops with bins of stuff from old bikes. Managed to find what I needed.

You also might try calling Harris Cyclery (the place where Sheldon Brown works). They still stock stuff for old 10 speeds. They might be able to help.
