UPDATED UPDATE _ 4:30PM START on FRI 24TH APRIL

Here's the new route (couple of laps of this or so):

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/BF-SanBrunoMtn (I modified the route that Pelikan posted)

The startpoint is here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=70+old+county+road,+brisbane,ca&vps=1&jsv=155c&sll=37.699306,-122.396278&sspn=0.063701,0.109863&num=10&iwloc=A&iwstate1=saveplace) - PM me for contact details.

We'll run the mellow/BlastRadius route another time

So following on from the "What do you like for your ride thread", seems like there could be some interest in a weekday ride up San Bruno Mtn. Since I work nearby, I could try to co-ordinate something. I suggest an end of the afternoon start - say a 4:30 or 5pm.

Two questions -

1) who'd be interested?

2) my normal route takes me out past the Brisbane lagoon and up Guadalupe Canyon and back. Can anyone suggest a better/longer/more interesting route? I could be interested in making this a couple of hours.

I could do 04/24, but 04/17 would be a no-no for me.

Who else?

As long as the 24th lands on either a weekday or a weekend, it's cool with me!

[edit: Friday at 4:30 to 5:00? Traffic will be awesome.]

Could anyone do a Wednesday?

If it were 4/13 or 4/14, I'd be all for it. Maybe I'll just do it anyways. Otherwise, if you do it on the weekend, I'm all down for that too.

I think I'd look at the following week - 04/24, perhaps start from the little mall in Brisbane, looks like a good bet.

I was originally just pinging BlastRadius to see if he wanted to catch a local ride - so I'm still interested to see if any of the peninsula old guard could recommend a way to get this into a 2-3hr ride? Once we're up the top of the mountain, are there any other good routes - say to the coast or perhaps into the city?

Apologies for the wishy-washy half-arsedness of this, but what the heck, perhaps we get an interesting ride out of all this.

There is a great route that Pete showed me to get to the Great Highway through Daly City. We can go through GGP and the Mission out to 3rd St and head back south along Bayshore. Maybe even stop at Zeitgeist for a Niman Ranch burger.

That's my backyard, but sadly neither date works for me. For some nice extra miles go down bayshore then right on twin cities blvd. It will take you around sum to other side of Guadalupe. The route is posted in the ronde thread.

You beat me to it -- yes, I'm still thinking of doing this.

I suggest we start at 4:30pm from the Brisbane mall (directions to follow later)

Henry, do you have a bikely or other description for the other part of the ride? I'm guessing that we should have ~3hrs of daylight here.

I used to do San Bruno Mtn., then head west on Eastmoor to Skyline, down Skyline, north Ocean Beach, pass the Cliffhouse, 34th pass the Legion of Honors, down and up into the Presidio, head back South on Arguello, into GGP, out near 4th Ave, East on Parnassus, up this service road behind UCSF, left Claredon, right up to Twin Peaks. From here I would head home back into the sunset or you can head back towards the SB Mtn. by going down O'shaunessy, Bosworth, Silver, San Bruno Ave.

Was my city loop. Might be a lot of traffic depending on the time of week/day.

Bumpity bump.

Not sure who's in at this point, can you reconfirm to me if you are? This looks like a nicely laid back ride with a built in stop for food. I'd appreciate someone who knows the city coming along for this, as my ability to navigate SF on a bike is sketchy at best (- Pete are you there?!)

If you're in can you confirm for me today/Thursday?

I took another look at the route; it might take us through some pretty busy corridors considering it's Friday evening. Specifically it's the routing through GG Park -> the Embarcadero that's raising red flags for me.

Unless we have Pete with us I'd recommend either:

1) re-scheduling to a later date - weekend maybe?
2) re-routing the ride somewhere less populated after SB Mountain

I quite agree. For the ride as advertised a reschedule in order.

I am still the owner of an afternoon/evening pass for Friday so if anyone can suggest a route to the south, I'll be there? Otherwise I'll repropose the ride when we can get more folks along - it'd be a good afterwork ride for me, but not so much for the weekend.

How about this route w or w/o jump to Brisbane Island?
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2625979

One can do laps to get in as many miles & hill repeats as one wants.
I'm 50% able to lead a lap.

That's my old neighborhood. Hillside is pretty flat and uneventful, unless you like cemeteries and Lucky Chances casino.

But one question ... where is the starting spot?

Beaker

Alrighty, then - we have a ride.

Startpoint will be the parking lot by the little mall and bank of America near the corner of Old County and Bayshore in Brisbane - hopefully this link works. I'll update the route with a bikely version later. We'll roll at 4:30.

See yall there. Gonna be slightly windy :)

pelikan
04-24-09, 01:39 PM
Just noticed the reversal of the route. I ran that way once and the Hillsdale back to Bayshore parts are crappy enough to warrant me not bother doing it that way again, plus you miss out on the Sister Cities pain (eso on a windy day). Bike paths either way, just much better going clock-wise.....my two cents.

Beaker
04-24-09, 02:05 PM
No problem with going clockwise. I've not done the Sister Cities climb before (and actually find the abrupt stop at the foot of that hill a pain) so let's give it a try. See you at 4:30 - half the fun with San Bruno Mtn is working out which way the winds going to come at you, right?

Beaker

I don't think that this qualifies for it's own thread, but great to hang with mellum76, spingineer and pelikan for a while this evening. Wow, was it windy - I award that a "3/4 Mt Diablo" on the wind scale. I was getting blown all over just spinning up Sister Cities. There were a few places which were suprisingly calm - including the back way up Guadalupe Canyon, which is usually a wind tunnel - go figure. Anyhow Mateo had to peel off at Radio Road, so the three of us made sure that Ron was able to check off his last bay area hill that remained unconquered.

Michael arrives at the top of Radio Road....

....and then manage to stand upright (ish) in the face of all the pacific has to offer.

Hey, I thought it was always windy on San Bruno Mountain. You mean this isn't normal? Anyways, I had a great time, with great company. Pelikan came by, looking really spiffy, in his Roaring Mouse kit. Hope I didn't hold everyone up ... I'll borrow Jobob's line ... just call me pokey.

I think we have a new name for this ride ... Windtunnel Mountain. It did give us some strength training. I actually think climbing San Bruno Mountain wasn't as bad as battling the headwinds Sister Cities ... that was hella windy. But coming down the mountain ... that was exciting, to put it gently. The descent after crossing the gate back onto the main road was fun and fast. I was riding the brakes a little bit, due to the wind, and I still got a max speed of 47 mph.

Pics to come later.

mellum76
04-25-09, 12:49 AM
^^

You beat me, my max speed was 46.34 despite my best efforts to be as aero as possible. Woo, what a blast!

Thanks guys, it was a nice diversion from my regular Friday ride. We'll have to do it again sometime. :)

I don't normally ride there at the end of the day, but it definitely gets worse in the afternoon. For my two cents, that wind was a little worse than normal, so I think you can indeed feel both fortunate and virtuous, Ron.

The wind was a bit brutal, but not by that much for late afternoon :) As I peeled off in San Bruno park, I could see you guys climbing to the peak...pretty cool.

Thanks for letting me tag along for a bit, nice to meet two new people and see a familiar one. Hope to see you guys out there again!

Ron, now that you've done all the hills, what is your most/least favorite?

spingineer

Ron, now that you've done all the hills, what is your most/least favorite?

Hmmm ... that's a tough one. I think I'd still have to say Old La Honda is my favorite, with Montebello coming a close second (only because it is local for me).

My least favorite? Probably Mt. Charlie (coming north from Scotts Valley), because once you finish that, you still have long rollies coming up Skyline, and it is just painful.
