BMX - Need Help with Wheels

Hi,

Been a long time since I've ridden a BMX bike. I has been a year since I had knee surgeries on both knees. I've decided to get a BMX bike to ride it around the park to continue with my rehabs. With that, I've picked up a used 1999 Schwinn Pro Stock 3 20". I am now looking to get new set of wheels since I've found out that the rear wheel is a little bent. The specs on the bike listed:

Front: 20 x 2.125" Schwinn XS Scrambler, Rear: 20 x 1.75" Schwinn XS Scrambler

The wheels that came with the bike is Alex AL-7X24D (Stock I believe)

I was browsing around the net and saw a set of wheels that caught my eyes. Would these fit my bike?

1. PRIMO BALANCE REAR WHEEL
2. SHADOW CONSPIRACY STUN WHEEL
3. ODYSSEY LITE CASSETTE V3
4. 20x1.75 SINZ PRO CASSETTE WHEELS
5. ACS Z MAG 5-SPOKE

What would you recommend? I'm looking for something lightweight. Please recommend wheels/tires combination is possible.

I've found out that the rear wheel is a little bent.

Just take it to your local bike shop and get the wheels trued and maybe a new axle if that's bent too. You don't need new wheels

if you get a new wheel the primo or the odyssey
the shadow is a lil heavy
if you get shadow get the spw its a lil lighter and cheaper but still good

Thanks everyone for the help. I'll take the wheel to shop first to see if it can be repaired/trued. I can see it wobbles a little when I flipped the bike over and spin the tire. Worst case I'll just get new set of wheels.

Just got back from the bike shop. Looks like I'll have to get new wheels. The guy listed all the prices to fix it and it just adds up. So, here's my plan. Hopefully I can get some expert advice on which to get.

I've researched and have narrowed my choices down to 2 wheels (Primo or Odyssey) and the hard part is deciding which size tires to go with the wheels. Here are my choices:

Just wondering, why are you going to put that much money into an older bike like that? Why not just buy a cheap set of wheels?

I've been reading the forums and many have recommended the above wheels/tires. Originally I wanted to get the ACS Z Mags, but some say not to get it unless you're 6-9 years old. What else do you guys recommend for a lightweight, but inexpensive wheels if there's such a thing? Thanks.

Yeah, don't get mags. It's not a big deal, and then if you upgrade your bike in the future you will have good wheels to throw on it.

That's true in case I upgrade a new frame down the road. I think I will go with the Primo Balance wheelset and possibly KHE Folding Street tires 20x1.90 rear and 20x2.15 front. Sounds ok?

Yeah they're good wheels, but why not just get regular tires? They're $20 cheaper and like 3 ounces more.

Fly Ruben's are good tires. And they're $25 each. Fit FAF's have a very similar tread to the KHE and they're $23. Or you could just spend the $45 for the folding tires.

I agree on the folding tires costing too much, some nearly doubled in price and the weight is only a few oz off. I made the choice and purchased the FIT FAFs (20x1.95 and 20x2.10). Thanks again for everyone's help.

Go with the odyssey wheels and the rueben tires.

Does anyone know if the 1999 Schwinn Pro Stock 3 frame has the "standard" or "integrated" headset? I'm changing out the stem (S&B Redneck) and might as well change the headset since I do see some rust.

Good choice on the wheels, the headset will definitely be standard. But if you plan on upgrading the frame at all in the near future, its not worth it to buy an expensive headset since it will have to be changed over to integrated now.

Thanks everyone. I was told that this frame can take Euro BB. Is this true? I will be adding the Profile Race cranks 175mm. This bike has American BB right now with Primo cranks (older version). Is it possible to switch to Euro BB?

Yeah, it could be switched to Euro with a conversion kit, but you don't want to. Euro bearings don't last as long as American or other ones.

Yeah euro is for mountain bikes. It is the worst bottom bracket option imo.

I agree. Mid is probably the best. It's small and looks clean. And the bearings last more than a few months.

Will Mid BB fit on the Schwinn Pro Stock 3 20" frame? I'm starting to see that some of the parts I originally want I can't get because of the old style frame. Like the Odyssey rear wheel, I was told that I can't get 9T or 10T driver because the frame only fit 3/8" so it has to be 12T for smallest size. What a bummer...

The Schwinn will most likely use an American BB, which is the same thing as a Mid BB with cups.

Yes american is mid, just with conversion cups, and you can still get those wheels, just grind out the dropouts to fit. There is no sence in trying to ride freestyle with 3/8 axle in the rear, you'll be destroying rear wheels often.
