Bicycle Mechanics - Tiagra hubs / Mavic rims - Staying True?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am considering getting a new bike that comes with Tiagra hubs and Mavic CXP-22 32h rims. I have heard that I may have trouble keeping them true. I'm 5'10, 215lbs.
Will I have a problem with these wheels or should I upgrade immediately and save myself the headache?
I do fitness rides and touring over a mixed bag of roads, a lot of crappy pavement and potholes. So I don't plan on being too gentle with them.
That rim would be a marginal rim meaning you will be doing more truing routines than with a rim that has more spokes. You could use a 36 hole Mavic Open Pro or Torelli Master Series, Ambrosio Excellence, or the Sun SR18 (the cheapest) all of which use double eyelit rims for more holding strength for the spoke (the CXP33 does not), The Torelli (silver only) and Ambrosio as well as the Sun (black only) both would be less expensive than the Mavic. Then use DT Competition 2.0/1.8 dble butte spokes with brass nipples for greater reliablity; then just have them laced 3x.
An option if the wheel thing starts getting too expensive just switch the spokes to DT Champion 2.0 which cost about 1/2 of the Competition spokes but are about 120 grams heavier for the pair.
While your at it you might as well get Ultrega hubs since they only cost $30 for front and $50 on rear, and would be far better than the Tiagra.

I thought that 32 was a fair amount of spokes. Is the problem with the hubs, the rims, the spokes or the number of spokes? These wheels are on a 2004 Bianchi Strada. What should I do if I order one? Have them replace both wheels right off the bat?
So, what are we talking here to upgrade? $250 for a new set of decent wheels? More? Less?
Laced 3X? What does that mean?

i have cxp22 rims with sora hubs (they came stock on my bike). ive been riding them since september and they are still true. the roads around here arent ridiculously rough or anything but they sure arent smooth. i would say if you can afford to upgrade get a set of mavic open pros laced to ultegra hubs (everybody i know that has them say they are tough wheels...look around the forums and you'll see what i mean)

I saw these wheels online at the Perfomance's pre-assembled wheel section (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/subcategory.cfm?Cat_ID=25&Sub_ID=5321):
Shimano® 105 9 speed / Mavic Open Pro 700c Road Wheel - Rear
$119.99
Shimano® 105 9 speed / Mavic Open Pro 700c Road Wheel - Front
$99.99
Is this a good deal? Are the 105's as good as Ultegra?

You may be better off talking to your LBS about building the wheels for you. A lot of shops offer truing warranties on wheels they build which can save you a lot in the longer run if you ever have problems. Ultegra/Open Pros have a reputation for being very strong, but if it were me I'd rather pay the small price premium and have the ongoing service (my LBS will build them for around $230 in black, which I think looks a bit nicer and usually is a bit more expensive at the online shops).
Whatever the case, you'll get a strong set of wheels for less than $250. Why not ride the Tiagra/CXP-22s and see what happens?

I might just do that since I don't thnik the LBS would give me much on trade.

I wouldn't ever expect too much on a wheel trade. Best I've ever come across was half retail. Typically I've seen even less on the less desirable wheelsets.
