OK im 6'4 247lbs, i know im a big guy. My rims keep getting bent. I have to go and get them trued up about once a month. Im not sure if thats just normal wear and tear or im a big ass guy and i need different rims. If so what kind do you recommend? Im not even sure what price range rims fall under so i guess nothing thats real race worthy, i dont think ill be needing them. Thanks guys

The Mavic Ksyriums are really tough wheels if you're looking for factory racing wheels but given your weight (sorry... no offense), they might not be tough enough... still something to consider. I believe I read that there were some riders in your weight class riding them without problems. You may also want to look at heavy-duty handbuilt touring wheels with 3-cross lacing for the back and 2-cross for the front. They'll probably be pretty heavy though.

Look for wheels with high spoke count (36).. the higher the number of spoke the longer the wheel will hold true..

I started riding at 310kb, and today, 2+ years later and over 100lb less, I still use the same wheels. I had to to true them twice in the past 2 years.. My wheels are some kind of cheappo Mavic rim and 105 hubs, with 32 spokes 3x lacing on the rear, and straight lacing on the front..

perhaps you need thicker gauge spokes and a stronger lacing pattern... instead of having to replace the entire wheelset?

Without knowing what kind of wheelset you have we cannot tell if it can be made stronger. If you buy a new wheelset and want a near bombproof desigh, then as one poster said get a 36 hole rim. Price wise the Sun CR18 at $38 is a very strong wheel and has dble eyelits which make the spoke connection to the rims stronger thus less likely hood of spoke pull out. For spokes use either DT competition 1.8/2.0 dbl butted spokes if weight is a concern and money is not, or DT Champion 2.0 if money is a concern. Use brass nipples for greater reliablity over the aluminum ones. Assuming you use Shimano then get Ultrega hubs which do not cost much more than the 105's and they are a better hub. And lace these 3x.

If your front rim has not had the issues you talked about and or you have money concerns, you could just use the front and replace the rear with a stronger set up...or have the front rebuilt with stronger spokes and make sure their laced 3x. A lot of factory rims these days radial lace the front or 2x the front, and if that is the case with yours the 3x should take care of all your problems on the front.

That's what I have (Mavic Ksyriums) and I'm 6' 250 (low BF %, I lift heavy). But weight is weight. Anyway, I didn't get the bike yet but I'll post when I do.

I ride the Ksyriums (Elite) at 220, and haven't had an issue, even with big potholes etc. Granted, only 600 or so miles on them, but haven't had an issue.

I am 6"3 and 250 and I have ridden and raced on a pair of Cane Creek Aeroheads for the past two seasons and I have yet to knock them out of true. I'd look for them online at Supergo or Performance. I found mine for about $250 for the pair and I couldn't be happier.

6'4" and 270 here. I've never had any trouble with 36 hole Mavic Open Pro's, laced to Ultegra hubs. Also never had any problem with Campy Chorus hubs.
