"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Sheryl Crow, why do you ruin dreams?

I've been watching "The Lance Armstrong Chronicles" since it began a few weeks ago. The last episode featured Lance @ his best supporting cancer survivors by way of his LAF. During his annual gala event, he auctioned off several items, which raised about $750k for cancer research.

One item was not material in nature, it was an opportunity for 2 ordinary people to get the ultimate LA/Postal experience by actually sitting in the team bus with the Postal boys before a stage. This package also included some more cool TdF Postal/LA stuff/experiences. I though to myself – what a great prize to win! Someone with cash to burn is going to really get something sweet, and unique.

Well, who do you think the high bidder was? Who ultimately won this prize/opportunity? You guessed it - Sheryl Crow. She's going to be with Lance in France anyway! Why would she take this opportunity away from someone? If she really wanted to help the foundation, she could have simply donated the money, and not crushed someone's dream.

Am I crazy for thinking this way? Thoughts?

You know... I was thinking the exact same thing.. If I was the second bidder, I would have been quite ticked off..

On a semi-related note.. I really hope Lance has his mind in the right place during the TdF.. I hope that a new GF, TV show, Magazine shoots, and commercials, havent distracted him too much.. You can already see he has had to compromise a bit.. a few shows ago, he said he would NEVER be shooting a commercial, or doing any of that stuff in April.. Then in this last show, he was shooting a commercial in April.. :Shrug:

if she actually donate the money, that's another point, if not she doesn't have the right to take away somebody else "dreams" as you have stated

I think it's a bad idea to have HER on the team bus before a stage, anyway. He could have ignored anyone else, but she requires attention. I think she's his succubus.

If someone at that party really wanted to do it, they could've out bid her... It was a fundraiser, she paid $55,000 to do it. Anyone who could've afforded that, could probably work out a way to be with the team for a day...even if not in the 'team meeting'. Either way, two 'ordinary' people as you put it couldn't afford the fifty thousand dollars for one day with the team. Its not like she was the only bidder...

As for Lance being distracted by GF, TV spots, etc., I don't see it happening. He has said over and over on "The Lance Chronicles" that he does not do things like that after April. And Ms. Crow will soon find herself in the same place that the former Mrs. Armstrong and kids have been in years past. Sheryl probably knew that that $55k donation was going to be her only chance to get anywhere near the guy come July.

Anybody that can afford to bid 50,000 certainly does not need my sympathy for getting out bid......and I don't care who any of the bidders were.

Who's to say Sheryl Crow won't quietly turn around and donate the TdeF "experience" to someone who could otherwise never afford to fufill such a dream, perhaps even via the LAF? This is often what happens at big-money celebrity auctions.

Well she didn´t want that price for herself...on www.thepaceline.com there is a review of the last episode of the lance chronicles and they said Sheryl gave that to her father...and the other guy who bidded for the ride on the Team car was Jim Hoyt lance old coach


Jim Hoyt, Sheryl Crow Score Goodies At Armstrong Gala

APRIL 22, 2004 -- AUSTIN, TX (BRAIN)--Richardson Bike Mart owner Jim Hoyt began to get nervous when his auction bid topped $50,000. In Austin for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's annual gala, Hoyt was bidding on a ride in a U.S. Postal vehicle during a Tour de France stage; by his side was rocker Sheryl Crow, who eventually outbid him at $56,000.

"Like she couldn't have gotten a ride," Hoyt jokingly said of Crow, Armstrong's girlfriend. "Quite honestly I'm glad she got it; I was in over my head."

Hoyt's three-store chain helped launch a young Armstrong into cycling years ago. He has been attending the Foundation's gala with his wife since 1998. The bidding for the ride in the Tour came after Armstrong lauded Hoyt and his operation before the crowd.

"Lance stood up and talked about us and our shop for a few minutes. That got us wound up. I almost had tears in my eyes," Hoyt said. "We're pretty proud of that young boy."

Hoyt didn't walk away empty handed, however. He now owns a 100th anniversary Tour de France jersey signed by the four living legends--Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain and Armstrong--who have each won five Tours.

While $55,000 is alot of money, it is not only celebs who can afford it. See the article about Jim Hoyt, who was outbid by Sheryl Crow. He owns three bike shops which does not exactly make him rich. I could afford the 55K (and I'm certainly not rich), although it would be a big chunk of money, but my wife would kill me. I'm lucky she indulges me when I want to spend 4K on a bike. Seems like everyone was happy with the outcome. Plus there's 55K going toward cancer research.

Unless she is vain, or dumb, or both... she probably won it for someone else.

I don't know how much the Jersey that Jim won is worth, but
I'll let you know what it looks like after I get a gander at it.

I agree with Marty. So far the Sheryl Crow as Yoko Ono prediction hasn't really panned out. But just to be on the safe side, I think Postal should kick LA off the team a la Kelme and Manzano if Crow visits the team hotel during the TDF.
