I'd have to agree with you there. Mash probably got them powdercoated.

They said they had them "special ordered"

they look like they are anodized to me. powdercoat is thick, the black looks almsot a little transparent, kind of a grey. and how the eff did they laser etch that insignia?! must have ordered them from campagnolo somehow... i want.

From what I read on the Mash blog, they were special ordered from Campy. They also wrote that they have already parted out some of the bike, including the black crankset.

so it sounds like they only made one set?

Not quite. Powdercoat has vastly improved since those days. The finishes are thin, and can be transparent like anodizing and also completely clear.
Cool stuff. Check it out.

Nah, they look like regular Record Pista cranks.

I got a super cheap Campy Record crank recently but it doesn't fit on my Surly Steamroller (the chain stays are too wide) so I'm thinking of putting it on my Broakland Pipe Bomb but that bike is completely black. I'm having some MKS toe clips powder coated black (they don't make LL in black for some reason) and if they turn out good then I'll probably powder coat the crank as well...if so I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
