Northeast - NYC Weekday Rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Unemployment is at a new high. Anyone up for some weekday rides? I'm thinking Piermont or Nyack or even Westechester.
I'd be up for it though this week is bad. Slow ride ;)

Slow is good. Did 24 miles on the North County Trailway at a rambunctious 11 mph. Could of been the head wind, or the brakes rubbing the front wheel after remounting the tire. :-(.
Rain today and tomorrow. High wind gusts forecast for Thu. Fri looks to be a good day this week. Next week I'm getting a cortisone shot for my back so I'm not sure what kind of shape I'll be in.
Friday and Sat are going to be beautiful.
I may try to go upstate sat if anyone is interested. (Rail Trail, not far out of town - we drive up in about 30 mins; u can also do Metro North)

You must mean the Westchester county trailways- North and South. The south can be picked up just past Van Cortland Park though I've never ridden that section. Usually we drive up to Eastview (exit 23 on the Saw Mill) which is not far from the Tarrytown station. I think its around 30 miles each way if you ride it to the end in Carmel. It turns into the Putnam Rail Trail when you cross into Putnam county. Fairly flat, but some nice scenery. That's where I rode yesterday.
I'm contemplating getting out now for a bit before the rain starts, but watching the branches of the tree in front of my apt blow in the wind is giving me second thoughts. I don't mind a breeze on a warm sunny day, but its looking kind of bleak out there right now.
Not the Slowest

Check out the NYCC board for weekday rides, some early, some late.
You can always post a ride and I am sure you will find some takers.

the wife just reminded me we are due in Brooklyn for a kiddie birthday party around 2 PM on Saturday, but I am determined to hit that trail by 8 AM or so to squeeze 20-30miles in.:D
anybody up?

That's the one, exit 23 is where we start, at that parking lot - we go right for the couple of miles to the beginning of the train (near UPS - see pic - and the animal hospital - dirt road/dead end), and then head for the reservoir bridge, or beyond depending on how our constitutions are that day.

This is early in the year for us both so I am thinking 20-30 tops (15 out & back) this week for us. Plus we gotta get back for the party and Traffic is always an issue - otherwise we'd struggle thru the 40-50 miles and then hit Totono's Pizza a few exits back:love: - Next Time for sure!:thumb:

Tomorrow is supposed to be real nice so I plan on crossing the GWB and riding river road to Alpine, and if the legs are there continue on to Piermont, or head back home. I may do laps of CP again today, or the length of the west side greenway.

I would be but Friday is going to be a really late night for me...like I'll be getting home around then I think ;) Next time - I LOVED that ride!

Skip the ride south to the UPS. Its approximately 15 miles one way from the Eastview Parking to the station in Yorktown Heights. Unless you make a long rest stop you should be back at your car by 11, and back to Brooklyn by 1. The Yankees are home this weekend which might make for traffic at the GWB if its a day game. If you want to venture further I think its 30 miles to the end in Carmel. Once you cross into Putnam county the trail gets nice and wooded once past Mahopac.

I usually work nights, and would have to get lights for the bike.
Just returned from River Road. Still getting my legs back so I only went a little past the Englewood picnic area. It's beautiful out. Should be even better tomorrow. I envy those that have the weekend free.
Just returned from River Road.
I tried to get onto River Road for the first time this weekend. Turned left off the GW, left on Annett Ave., climbed a bunch--and ended up back at the GW. The road I followed doesn't appear on Google Maps, though I think I can kind of make it out in the satellite view.
Next time...

Sounds like you made a wrong turn. Annett rd lead into the Edgewater Colony. You need to make the left into the park on Henry Hudson Drive (aka River Road), it turns into quickly north and takes you back under the bridge.

OK...so is this map incorrect?

Nope same map, but it sounds like you went straight on annett when yo made the left, rather than keeping left all the way onto River Rd. When you go correctly its like making a wide u-turn, down hill all the way back to the bridge, On the map the road shows as Henry Hudson Drive, though everyone calls it river road.
Staying on annett will take you through the Edgewater colony, and back to River Road in Edgewater, where a right turn will put you on a long climb back to the bridge
I think I actually stayed TOO left after Annett. If you switch to satellite view, there are roads winding back up to Main St.
It's helpful to know I at least made the initial left correctly. Thanks--I'll try it again.
AHA! I figured it out.
I missed the first Annett and made a left at the second.

If you take the new bike path down, instead of riding down Main St, you can't miss it. Just make the left when the bike path ends, :-)

And here I thought I was being smart by avoiding dead-ending on the bike path...

Ahhhhhhh - was curious where that went to. That'll be MUCH better than that suicide hill turn!
OK - I'm going...somewhere today. Nyack? Anyone interested?
I'm up for a day ride (or an evening ride) today. I do have to get some work done first but I can meet up after 3:35 PM.
So, do you pick up the new bike path in the park?
Thanks.

Give me a ring later on - will be heading up with dendawg but not sure if I'll attempt the whole Nyack trip or just part of it.
When are you leaving? There's a nonzero probability of my getting out of here early today.

Good riding with you today Air. I had to cut the ride short because of the late start. Did you continue on to Alpine? I swear the wind turned when I got back to Riverside. Almost got blasted off the bike a couple of times.
Nice riding with you too - thanks for all the info when we got to NJ :D
I went up to Piermont. And yeah, that effin' wind was blowing in my face the entire way there and back. Truthfully the only reason I went all the way up was because I thought it would be fun having a tailwind for a change. FAIL. Oh yeah, and had a blowout (luckily right in front of the bike shop in Piermont) and broke my seat on the way back.
Had to have been the hardest 50 miles I've done in a long, long time. But still a great day to be out!
You blow out tires? No! Never!
But breaking the seat is a new thing... Time to get a Brooks. ;)
Oh, man--you stopped a mile short of the Runcible Spoon?
We'll have to remedy that.
And yeah, WTF with the wind this evening? I was hitting headwinds and crosswinds all the way home.
Yeah...another tube felled by the Armadillo. Just got the new tire, just didn't have time to put it on. We'll see how it holds up...with the Slime inserts (between the tube and tire). I am done playing around!
Air, which tire keeps blowing?
@ Noteon: Darn tootin'! The wind was crazy today.

Sounds good to me - but that deli near there makes some killer sandwiches. They had this chocolate cake with cheese cake filling; would not have made it back without it!

I don't know but my body feels it all over. Ouch.

Rear. Just too many glass cuts, the tube tries to squeeze out. Put some shims in there, apparently wasn't good enough.
Hopefully this new tire with Slime insert will do the trick. If not, then Schwalbe. If not...Air-less ;)

The one on the left, with the bike racks? I haven't had the sandwiches, but for coffee/pastry stuff, there's no comparison. We need to get you the real thing.
On the way there, the one on the right. No racks, two benches but I can bring in my bike :)

You mean the Community Market right on Piernont Ave? I like the sandwiches at Canzona’s Market better, cheaper and bigger, but out of the way along the creek. Bunberry's is pretty good for coffee and pasteries. Also what used to be the Sidewalk Cafe (tex mex) is now a french bistro. The food is still good and I believe when they are not crowded they will let you bring your bikes into the garden in back. When it was the tex-mex place they would and they had $2 Sam Adams drafts (not recommended for the long ride home, but then neither were the margarita's).
AIr I'm ready to ride again tomorrow if you've got your bike back together. I need to do an earlier start, maybe 10 or 11 am, then Nyack wont be a problem. Weather should be nicer. Same temps but without the breeze!
Oops, just saw this - hope you got some miles in! My body is HATING me right now - that wind really kicked my ass.

Slept in till almost ten. Finally got out as 12:45. Took River Road to Alpine and came back with 9W. Barely felt a breeze on the way up and it felt great riding in the sunshine. Was even drenched in sweat by the time I got to the police station. Unfortunately the wind picked up from the SE for the return, but nothing like yesterday.

Yeah - apparently it was the only thing left.

If you can be on the Jersey side of the bridge at 6:15/6:20 am I'm game up to the Closter Dock Road intersection.

A little too early for me. I'm just home from work now. I'd have to be out of my apartment around 5:40 to make it to the NJ side of the bridge at 6:15. Last summer I did a lot of 7am meet at the GWB river road rides, returning with 9W. Back at the GWB by 8:30 am the latest if there were no mechanical problems. This morning I got out around 7:45 am and rode to the Englewood boat basin, back home around 2 hours later at a leisurely pace.

I woke up too late to go on the training ride this morning so I commuted in, unfortunately the south walkway was closed so I had to use the north walkway which wasn't much fun because of the multiple staircases you have to go up and down. Any word on how long it's going to be closed?

I think its closed weekdays only until July. I wound up sleeping in and didn't get out till 9:45 so I decided to just do the length of the green way. I did get to see that low flying jet chased by a f-16 when I got down to battery park. Made for some difficult navigation coming back with everyone coming out of their office buildings to get a look!
