From CNN.COM

CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) -- President Bush fell off his bicycle Saturday while riding on his ranch, according to White House spokesman Trent Duffy.

Bush, who was accompanied on his bike ride by his doctor, Richard Tubb, a military agent and a member of the Secret Service, fell about 16 miles into a 17-mile ride.

Bush suffered minor abrasions to his chin, upper lip, nose, right hand and both knees, but was able to ride back home, Duffy said.

Tubb treated the president at the scene. Bush was wearing a helmet and a mouth guard when he fell, Duffy said.

Reporters were told not to be surprised if the president is bandaged next time he appears in public.

Bush is scheduled to deliver an "important speech" Monday night about the transfer of political power in Iraq. The speech will be televised at 8 p.m. from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Last June in Kennebunkport, the president fell while riding a "Segway Human Transporter." First lady Laura Bush witnessed the spill; a picture of Bush falling forward was published on numerous Web sites. He was not injured.

In January 2002, Bush fainted for a brief time in the residence of the White House while eating a pretzel and watching a professional football game on television.

At the time, Tubb said the president blacked out and fell to the floor from a couch but appeared to have recovered quickly.

Following that incident, Bush had a bruise on his lower lip and a scrape on his left cheek bone about the size of a half-dollar. Bush believed his head either hit the floor or a table next to the couch and that his glasses cut his face.

Despite Saturday's fall, the president and first lady still planned to go to a graduation celebration in Austin for their daughter Jenna.

The White House confirmed that Jenna did not go to her University of Texas graduation ceremony Saturday to pick up her English degree.

Her parents had already decided not to attend, saying they did not want to disrupt the event by their presence and that of White House security.

Jenna's twin sister, Barbara, graduates Monday from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, with a degree in humanities.

Her parents gave the same reason for not attending her ceremony. Aides said they plan to have a private dinner later.

I guess you can choose between a guy who falls off a mountain bike and a guy who falls off a road bike.

No, I think the score is, right now, to our knowledge 2 or 3 to 1... Kerry - 1, Dubya 2 (maybe 3)... as follows:

Kerry - road bicycle spill

Dubya - MTB spill, Segway spill (2) and some people like to mention choking on a pretzel (so maybe 3)...

Anyway, we've all taken spills, so that's cool... its the crashing a segway that concerns me - I'm notcing some pattern here... he gets around like he talks - stumbling and fumbling. ;)

He should wear that last thing more often

You know, these are starting to sound like the kinds of excuses
you hear from battered women who are protecting their abusive
husbands. I wonder if Rummy is pushing George around, giving
him the occasional beating, and George just doesn't want anyone
to know what a wuss he is. So he makes up these ridiculous
things about "fainting" and "falling off a bicycle." When he
"walks into a door frame" we'll know for sure.

The scariest thing is not that he fell off a bike--who on this list hasn't done that?--but that he dumped a Segway!

Those things are said to be "idiot proof". I guess one can draw their own logical conclusion from that. From what I understand, the built-in gyroscopic stabiliser doesn't really work too well if you don't turn it on. :)

I think the American cycling community are owed a 24 hour adrenlyn competition between Bush and Kerry...
Will the event be split by roadies vs. mtb supporters..
Heck, the debates are so staged, they are worthless.
He who wins the presidency wins based on technical points awarded by a panel of cycling judges. He who can't ride a bike, as George Wallace once pointed out, should not be president.

But we understand your surprise. In your world, where you get a trial run down the ski slopes before the photographers are invited along, it's hard to envision someone sweating and panting for the pure physical joy of it all. That's what the president does, and why his resting pulse rate is somewhere around 45 beats per minute... a lot closer to professional cyclist Lance Armstrong's resting pulse than that of the senator from Massachusetts.

Of course, that's only speculation. We don't acturally know John Kerry's heart rate, because he won't release his full medical records. Search "John Kerry" and "medical records" on the Internet, and you get a statement from his campaign detailing his medical condition...in the 1960s.

Kerrry made a snide remark and then realized he better drop the health issue....FAST.

What brand of bike does Dubya have? (not a Huffy, I presume!) or is that classified?

CNN's Larry King fell off a mountain bike at Ted Turner's ranch in Montana I think a year or two ago.

The question is also being pondered over in the Mtb forum. One of our Texas members thinks his shop might have serviced an executive Trek Fuel 90.

That had to be priceless watching "the frog" take a tumble. I would love to see some footage of that. BTW, yeah just about everybody crashes on a bike. However most on here ride a lot of miles in order to crash. I am averaging about a crash every 1000 miles right now.

I am not aware that Bush is a regular bike rider. I bet he is averaging about a crash every 17 miles. I don't eat that many pretzels but I have never choked on one. I don't know Bush's pretzel choking rate but i speculate that is bad as well. Anybody see a trend here?

Um, they have both fallen off bikes. Kerry fell off his road bike a couple months ago. I for one don't care, as I am sure most people here ;) have fallen off of their bikes once or twice. If anything I would be more embarassed about Kerry's fall on the road than falling from a mountain bike offroad...

And for the mouthpiece thing - it's good that he had it. I would want any president to wear one while mountain biking (road riding.. maybe not). If Bush knocked his front teeth out just prior to going to a summit meeting somewhere it wouldn't look too good would it?

I think the real story isn't that Bush fell off a bike (who cares, really?), but rather that he was on an 18 mile mountain bike ride. That actually scores points in my book.

So far as I can tell the National Review is the only Media outlet that has made this into a political issue

Which it is not, both candidates are athletic people and I am sure they have fine resting heart rates

By the way I did a google search on GWB Medical records and came up with no official medical records on his part either.

True, but don't forget George Bush senior's 'Barf Diplomacy' in Japan! Its all that much easier and effective to barf when a few teeth are missing.

I remember watching a guy on a bike at a red light doing a track-stand. He started tipping, but couldn't unclip. I watched as he helplessly went down...and down...and down.

I suppose if the President choked on a pickle from a McDonald's hamburger, or launched a snot-rocket into the wind, that would be news, too. How come I never get in the news?

Dubya is quite physically fit. If you recall the famous pretzel attack, the reason Dubya fainted is because his low resting heart rate makes him more susceptable to faint in a coughing spell. As I understand it, he took up cycling because he has bad knees from running. Since I haven't seen any photos from this, or any other ride, I would have to say he rides for fitness, not the photo op.

I think we're seeing a mishap competition from the presidential candidates: Kerry fell off a bike, so Bush must fall off a bike (the mouthguard and the accompaning doctor--when you know you're going to take a tumble, it makes sense to protect yourself). I wouldn't be surprised if Kerry takes a spill from a Segway and chokes on a pretzel sometime before the election, and, considering the photo of Kerry's daughter at Cannes, I also wouldn't be surprised to see photos of one of the Bush daughters at a wet t-shirt competition.

No one bikes for the photo op, because there is no way to do so without looking like a dork to the general public. I hope Bush loses in November, but the fact that he took a spill 17 miles into a ride makes me dislike him a little less.
