One of my favorite trails seems to have many rattlesnakes along the trail. I was rattled at several different times, and nearly bitten when one came at me. I was wondering whet effects pepper spray, or bear spray might have.
The trail is a 14 mile loop and very woodsy, getting bit might be fatal.

The few times I ran across rattlesnakes while hiking in Colorado, they were easy to deal with- just step away. Not necessarily the same species that you're dealing with, but I can't imagine peperspraying them is going to improve the situation. (You might taste better with hot sauce, after all!) I'm thinking the regular bear spray is expensive, too. Maybe ride that route when it's colder, or in early mornings. Maybe look into some of the snake chaps or boots. Maybe it's time for a Tallbike.

I see snakes, some poisonous , some not , & I just let them be & go around them. Kids were hunting Easter Eggs, yesterday, & one turned over an old scrap piece of wood. There was a CORAL snake under it, & the kid alerted the family. It was killed because of the kids who are always around that house.

Lol, generaly I don't mind snakes and will go arround, wait them out etc.. The when I encouted a huge 5' long rattlesnake, he was right there at the end of a switchback ( about 3' from me). I don't think pepper spay would have helped much. I bailed off the bike and ran backwards , he decided to chase me for about 15 yards, which is unusual.
I did'nt wanna run .... But that big boi almost got me. The sound of those rattler's will be with me for the rest of my life. :twitchy:
I'm and ol school brawler, but when it comes to rattlesnakes I freak.

We have a lot here in the Sierra foothills also and generally they are out most in Spring/Fall, although you can see them all summer long. Also if there is any construction nearby it can bring them out. I would suggest riding somewhere else for a while. I killed a few with a shovel when I was younger but now just try to let 'em be, and yeah, that sound...ugh.
