There are several different approaches to it. Arguably the best way is to remove the chain completely and let it soak in solvent for a (long) while. Another approach is to use a brush or on-the-bike chain cleaning gadget. You don't have to clean the chain every time you re-lube it. BTW, there was a recent discussion:

and for everything you might need to know about chains see:

Hope that helps and feel free to ask again if you didn't get your question answered.
I like to take the chain off my bike, stick it in a zip-lock bag with 1/4 of a bottle of amonia, and enough water to have the chain completely submersed. Leave it in there for 30 mintues, take the chain out, rinse it with water, dry it off, and put it back on the bike.

1- put chain in empty milk jug
2- add citris degreaser
3- shake like hell

Repeated breaking of regular chains with chain tools, weakens them.
With Shimano chains, you need to use a new link each time.
If you want to remove a chain, fit a Sachs power link so you can break it by hand each time.
How you clean a chain depends on what the dirt is. Often, you just need to rinse the dirt off with water, and re-lube.
If you use a strong solvent, you have to ensure very good re-lubing inside the links. Somes lubes gets impregnated into the metal surface, and solvents can strip this out.
