Did my first century yesterday. Went well, finished strong and have no pain to speak of today. No pain on the ride itself.

Last night however I did have some pain on the outside of my left knee across the knee cap. I iced it, and it seems fine today, but I'd like to know what this is in order to keep an eye on it. I've got longer rides planned for the upcoming season and would like to avoid injury.

There was more climbing on this ride than I am used to (that's not hard!) and I stood for most of it.

Bike fits like a glove, but I have not had a cleat fitting. I'm running eggbeaters.

Thoughts? Advice?

But also ... is the pain above the knee ... like at the part of the thigh/quad that meets the knee? If so, you're feeling the climbing. It's normal. The more climbing you do, the more you'll build up those muscles.

No - ha, I feel that burn too, but I am familiar with it.

The pain I speak of is more or less exactly across the knee-cap. I only experienced it the night after the ride (not during, and not the next morning) but it was alarming when it was there, if only because I know how delicate knees are. I iced it and that seems to have fixed it for the time being, but I'm worried about it recurring / getting worse.

It seems that the foot on that leg (left) moves rather a lot during my pedal stroke. My pedals have a lot of float, and rather than pointing forward, that foot seems to go heel out. Could this be part of the problem?
