I will be travelling the Columbia River Highway in a few months, and would like to know if there is access to the HCRH trail near Moffett Creek, eastbound, just west of Exit 40. I can't seem to find much online about this.

Here is a link to the ODOT biking map for the Columbia River Gorge.

http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/HCRH/images/HCRHbikemap.pdf

If you have time you can also request a free hard copy from ODOT by snail mail.

Hope this helps.

I have that map, the trouble is it doesn't really show the detail I want at that location. Basically, I want to start on the trail at Moffet Creek, just west of Exit 40. I'll be heading east, and that is the issue. So far, it looks like I will have to go through to Exit 40, and double back if I want to see the bridge.

Yes, that's what you have to do.

The bike trail is on the north side of I-84 and crosses under the freeway just west of Exit 40. The last time I went through there (last July, heading west) it was easier to use the vehicle roads than the bike trail- a slide had covered part of it.

That part of the trail is not much to write home about- it's almost on the shoulder of I-84, so the only advantage is having a Jersey barrier between you and auto traffic. If you're going east, there's nothing at all to recommend it!

The rest of the trail from Exit 40 to Cascade Locks it darn pretty, and it does get quite a ways from I-84. Watch out for the stairs just before the Cascade Salmon Hatchery!
