Did a decent ride yesterday through countryside in northern Indiana and had a couple comments / observations regarding the Amish (decent size amish community here abouts).

went past a farmhouse / barn with a bunch of buggies outside (no horses...guess they were pastured) and a ~30-40 bikes out front...msut have been a large easter meal / service of some sort. Intersting how many of the bikes were Raleighs...probably 2/3 of them...typically hybrid / utility types...most fairly new looking...couple more touring / commuting style road bikes (think i even saw a Surly LHT!)...just got me wondering why the bias to raleighs...maybe its just the brand of the local amish bike store (which i havent been to yet). Interesting though there were some pretty good machines there...for some reason i picture them more on a Danish style black / dark green cruiser than some of those bikes...seemed like a little too much color and style for the amish!

Why is it that if i walk my dog and he craps on sidewalk / road I am expected to pick it up but its apparently ok for Amish people / horse riders to leave massive pile of horse dung in road! damn...was like a minefield out there...makes me feel better to have fenders on the bike though!

Last observation...nothing beats a nice ride on mostly empty streets through the country side...others might like going to church / mosques / synagogues...but for me a nice long ride through the countryside is good for the soul

I'm guessing that the folks with those bikes are Mennonite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mennonite) rather than Amish. I'd think modern bikes wouldn't be sufficiently plain -- especially the LHT!

As for the horse apples, here in Ohio (largest Amish population in the world) it gets picked up in the towns but not in the country. Stay out of the center of the lane, and you'll be ok!

Around these parts the old-order Mennonites tend to ride road bikes, with clip-on aero bars. The local Amish don't have bikes.

Not sure what make and model of bikes predominate.

I'm guessing Mennonite also. There's a Mennonite bicycle shop about 40 miles from here. It looks like a sleepy little place from the outside, but he probably sells more bikes than any shop within 60 miles. He stocks a lot of Raleighs and Fujis, and more recumbents than you'd believe.
