I am 66 years old and new to riding and this forum. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a good pair of comfortable riding shorts.
I just purchaed my first road bike ,a TREK MADONE 4.7. I have about 200 miles on it.I have already replaced the stock saddle that came with it for a KOOBI PRS. I do like the saddle, however it feel like I can squeeze out a little more comfort with some extra padding in my riding shorts.
Any recommendations on some comfortable shorts with a little extra padding in them for some longer rides(30+miles)?
I am up to 20 miles now 3X a week, Some discomfort with minor numbness. 3 minute breaks off of the bike cure that. Appreciate any and all recommendations.
Thanks

Right there is probably the issue. Your "sit bones" aren't yet accustomed to riding. I'd tough it out until you get 500-1000 miles personally. I did the same thing when I started back up, but after thousands of miles in all honesty I can ride about any saddle (except a darned Brooks)

That padding in Lycra shorts is not padding for comfort- it is a liner to wick away moisture from the vital areas- and that does basically the same job. The better the liner-the better the comfort but cost always goes up.
There are some shorts that have a layer of foam inplace of- or aswell as- the liner and they are not that comfortable for everyone. Feels as though you are wearing a diaper all the time. I do have a pair but to be honest- I have better comfort from good quality shorts that fit properly. The ones I now use are made by Giordana and they fit well and the liner works superbly.

I have a PRO Pearl Izumi pair that I use now. Thanks for your comment Stapfam. I think that CCrew is right when I get some miles under my Butt ,I will be better off.

This illustrates that there's no one-size-fits-all solution to saddle issues. I can barely ride anything EXCEPT Brooks--I have B17s on three bikes, and since I started using them, more than 15 years ago, everything else has been uncomfortable for me (I still have other saddles on my singlespeed and an old mountain bike, because they get wet sometimes).
For the original poster, mileage probably is a factor here. It takes some time for your butt to get toughened up. Meanwhile, you might fiddle with the setup of the saddle, the tilt and fore-and-aft adjustment. Sometimes just a millimeter or two up or down on the nose will make a difference. Move in small increments--measure from the top tube to the tip of the saddle, then adjust by no more than an eighth of an inch or so at a time and try a test ride.

Your FIRST road bike is a MADONE?
Extra padding is not what you need. Ditch the Koobi and get a Selle SMP or a Brooks B-17.
Decent bib shorts like Descente Aero X or Hincapies or Castelli.
Thick gel saddles and shorts are a no no. And never wear underwear under the shorts.
First bike is a MADONE?
I'm 64 and switched from shorts to bibs in 2003 and have never looked back.
Give them a try. Here is a link to the inexpensive quality bibs I started with.

You'll probably want the fancy ones to match your fancy bike. ;)
Most of my bibs are basic black. :thumb:

Ok guys..Thanks for all the comments. More miles is what I have been doing. The butt is starting to get use to it. I am up to 25 mile each time out. Yes I do like the Madone. I had to part with all of my Skydiving Gear(retired after 22 years of jumping) to get what I wanted. Everyone to his flavors!
What is the advantage with the Bibbs? The Selle SMP looks interesting. I have never worn underware under the shorts.
