Geezer

I'll give a more detailed intro than most. I am 60 years old (hence, GEEZER) & have been riding again since three years ago. I brought my Raleigh 10-speed out of storage. I couldn't get up some of the local hills on it, so I got a LeMond Nevada City. Since then I have added a Trek 520 touring bike, a Dahon Espresso folding bike to keep in the trunk of my car, & two Fujis: a Roubaix and a Marseilles.
I do most of my riding locally, but occasionally I get out on bike paths, usually the Mt. Vernon/Alexandria path, which is dangerous. Lots of rollerbladers, joggers, dogs, kids, and inexperienced riders use that path.
In November of '01 I was assaulted by three guys who told me I had to ride on the sidewalk. I wound up in intensive care for a week with a collapsed lung. The police never caught the guys; I don't even think they tried very hard. Now I have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, & it is always with me when I ride.
I feel like a kid again when I am out cycling. Well, kinda--I have infirmities I didn't have as a kid; and I don't have the stamina I once had, of course.
My favorite rides are in mild weather on moonlit nights. We have smooth roads where I live, and the sensation of the breeze on my face, the wind rustling in the foliage, & the easy glide of my bike give me the illusion that I am floating between the sky and the earth, at peace.
Last year I rode 2,700+ miles, & my aim is to exceed 3,000 this year. I already have gone a third of that.
I salute all my fellow "roadies." May you continue to have many safe, enjoyable rides ahead of you. Wear a "brain bucket;" sooner or later you will have an "unplanned dismount," & you will be happy you were wearing one.
Biographical jazz: USMC; Taxi owner/operator/dispatcher; Warehouseman; BA English Lit.; Heavy equipment mech/training instructor; Xerox copier tech; Xerox customer service rep; Computer help desk tech.
