Crap. I'm an idiot. I just noticed that Monsters of the Midway 30+ Masters race has no categories. Uhmm... I'll be happy if I can hang on for one lap :twitchy:
I also signed up for the cat 4.

Having masters at 30 is really a joke! People regularly win the TDF over 30! 35+ should be the lowest age ... and 40+ makes the most sense IMO.

It will be a good learning experience. You might even surprise yourself.

It has less to do with ability than it does to do with filling fields.

MJH2, I agree that's what they think they are doing ... but it is faulty, and stupid logic. Let's add people that are better than the group to be in this group so the group is bigger ... Uh huh. And then when the people who would sign up for the group see they have no chance of winning as a whole bunch of people are there that shouldn't be .. .they don't show. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy.
How about make the categories as makes sense, 35+ at a minimum.
not that I'm a bitter 49 year old or anything ... lol. But sure, me competing with a 30 year old seems real fair doesn't it ... Ha!

well.. i did like the 4/5 masters 35+ category at the burnham crit.. at least its fair to split the field in 4/5 and 1/2/3 for the masters. But an open masters with no cat is just asking for a cat 4 or 5 to be lapped or pulled after a few minutes into the race :(

FWIW I believe that it is 35+ at Nationals.
My personal experience also leads to the belief that there is little difference between 30+ and 40+ masters. Hell, I think it could be that 40+ masters is typically faster! I mean, there are A LOT of guys in their 30's who have been racing forever but refuse to race masters. I think you're a lot more likely to see a 44 year old Cat 1 jump in the 40+ than you are to see a 34 year old Cat 1 jump in the 30+ (as opposed to just racing the P/1/2).
As Psimet about our 30+ race at Elgin last year. There was a big money race going on in Elk Grove the same day, so there wasn't a huge turnout. Some guy wrecked the 40+ race. Then raced the 30+ and wrecked that as well (including lapping us... A LOT).

I was dumb enough to race in the 40+ in Wood Dale last summer. That's a .7 mile course. I was lapped 3 times by the 40+ pack! My average speed was about 22 mph for the 50min race. I was not the only guy to be lapped so we were able to work together. On the last few laps, the goal was, "Let's not get lapped a fourth time!"
Yeah, they're fast.
