I kinda doubt those Cervelos would fair too well doing 5' drops or bouncing over a rocky and rooted singletrack.

I'm 90% sure 24 are designed in france and build overseas, proberly in taiwan.
http://www.24-bicycles.com/

Pretty sure banshee are made overseas as well. Proberly most of konas are as well.

According to http://unrealcycles.com/items/243-4130frame.htm .243 are made in taiwan.

Evil imperials are made in canada.

d_D...I think 90% of the bikes made in canada are made in taiwan. Its even happening to balfa now that Procycles has taken more control of the building process...I think he was more asking where the companies are based...

Not even RM builds all their frames on the shore. It sucks...but thats the way I look at it. They are still canadian...

I knew france came in somewhere...ahaha

Makes me feel worse...It's a Canadian company selling Canadian jobs overseas... A betrayal of sorts. The core reason I asked this is I want to support JOBS here in North America, Canada specifically, not support a company's coffers.

Oryx is another large one that people seem to be forgetting about.

Miele is a smaller company, although apparently I was told by a dealer that they sell more bikes than all the other Canadian companies combined. Total BS, but I could be wrong on that one. :)

Don't recall any others that I know that aren't listed already.

I thought Miele was Italian...

Is it possible Miele is also a distributor?...could they be selling 'other' bikes...

Oh that just sucks. I had an old RM fusion, had that b/b u-brake '88 I think. I loved that bike, had to retire it when the rear dropouts more or less evaporated.

Yeah and slowly being reduced to machine built. Rumours are RM will be moving their production to quebec...(same place as balfa)

That will kill them. Thier 'hand built on the west coast' motto is what sells their bikes. If Procycle ruins the RM brand I will be pissed... and my next bike will be a DeKerf. :)

Miele has always been Canadian as far as I know... I have a '91 sitting in storage.

Miele is also a brand of kitchen utlities, so that's possibly what you're thinking of.

As far as I know, most of the U.S. brands are made in China / India, etc. Pretty much nothing is made in North America these days. Although from what I was told Miele and I assume a few others were still made in Canada. But I'll bow to Mealstrom's post as this was just from a guy running a shop, who at the time I took his word but now I'm fairly certian he was an idiot.

The guy said Ottawa had as much smog as Toronto. I didn't feel like correcting him. He's pro Toronto area, and lived in the GTA for many years, no idea why he moved to Ottawa but he did and runs a bike shop there and I assume, hates his life. Which, makes me happy.

uh, ok. :)

I live in the GTA. Not a big fan.

It's probably safe to assume that some of the smaller manufacturers are building their bikes here while the bigger companies forever in pursuit of $ instead of a more virtuous goal, like making great bikes, are doing stuff overseas. That doesn't make me happy.

Ironically specialized makes some of the strongest bikes on the market. Also easily one of the best freeride rigs in the demo9 or even the bighits. There street bikes only have one or two bikes that even come close to the strength and quality. I don't see where specialized is sacrificing anything. And arguably RM and balfa both made some of the most overhyped duallies around. Always having issues with breakages or just poor riding (due to poor chainlines, weird proprietary construction etc...)...

Anyways there is already a thread on this. No need to get another thread moved to political forums.

The rm thing being bought is a future rumour I suppose. They have always been owned by procycle but now there have been rumblings of RM going the way of balfa and moving all production east. But again this was some rumblings. It took 2 years to move balfa over. My hope/dream is that they increase production/sales thereby dropping the cost of the bike. I liked most RM bikes (until I read more on the pretty poor designs) but could never afford them.

I lived in the tri-city area a few years ago. Born and raised. Biggest regret I have is not leaving Ontario sooner in life.

The more reading I do about Devinci the more impressed I am with them. Frames made here and they're putting a lot of thought into them. Reading reviews are one thing but riding is entirely another.

tri-city? Lived here 28 years and I have no clue what you're referring to. Etobicoke, Toronto & Scarborough? KW & Cambridge?

Maelstrom
05-28-04, 12:28 PM
kw/cambridge and Guelph...

Devinci are definately making an impact...they have some sweet frames. Not a big fan of their freeride lineup. And their allmountain lineup is more like what I call a xc bike but they are good for the regular trail rider.

I wish oryx was a 'real' company. They make some seriously sweet bikes.

The Ollie certainly has had impact with the press. Looks freaken sweet to me. I also think the MoonRacer looks great as a XC bike.

YEah the ollie is a good bike. I just personally don't like single pivots. But thats how they stay reasonable. No liscence fees to pay.

I am a big fan of the hucker too (always a little hartail love in me)
