Northern California - Riding DMD?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Say hello when you get to Windy Gap. That's the rest stop about a mile below the summit of Hamilton.

Will say hello if I still have the power of speech by then :)
Do you know what type of drinks the organizers are providing ?

Past years at this stop we've had water, various sodas from Costco - whatever is cheap there I think, V-8, Sustain and various hammer gels. Ours is a mini stop between the lunch stop at the Junction Cafe and Crothers, so we don't have a lot. We never have much food. The main rest stops have lots of different things to snack on though, so stock up.

I'll be working the water stop below Patterson pass.

Well, there's only two volunteers, plus the Ham Radio guy at Windy Gap. I'm the cute one. :D

Yay V & Thom!
And best wishes to all the DMD participants. :)

Should be much nicer weather this year for DMD. Good luck all you KOM's.

Indeed.
Here's hoping it's less than 100 degrees like when I did it 2 years ago! And less windy than it was at Laguna Seca Tuesday when we were at track school! And puppies and unicorns!
See you out there V. As I recall, you saved a V8 for slow me last time. ;)

Thanks for looking after us so well today princessZippy. The ice cold drinks were very welcome on the blazing hot Hamilton climb.

Yes, the cold water on Hamilton was HUGE. Thank you (and all the volunteers) so much! I made it back around 9pm for a total of 16 hours 10 minutes. I'm beat....

Great job to you guys and everyone else who finished. We rode down Mines around lunch time to keep a couple of friends company, and it was hot! First really hot day of the year, just to make a hard ride harder......
Well done!

15:18:47 ride time for me, somewhere over 17 hours total. Hands didn't like the Castelli gloves I brought by mile 91 but a lot of motrin helped block the part of the brain that says ow. Marco said the back brake pads were rubbing, which they were. I didn't want to stop on the first climb though so I waited until Diablo summit to correct the problem. I could have used those precious lost watts later.. Mistake on where to send the warm gear and lights. I chose Crothers and not the stop after Sierra. Burning up doing that climb with a lot of extra items. More to come.

What is DMD? Link? It sounds way too hard for me, but I like to see how others punish themselves.

Thanks. Were you in TnT gear? I saw a few TnT riders coming down Mines as we were climbing up.
I'm working on a ride report... but it's going to take some time.

Usually the riders are SO appreciative of us being out there. It's an all day affair for us too - not quite as long for the riders, but close - a 15 hour day for us. Windy Gap is about as remote as you can get. :D This is the first year we've had someone not be very nice. It was bizarre. I hope it's an aberration because if we get nasty people, volunteering becomes not fun.

I wasn't, but a couple of friends were. I was in a jersey from the Lighthouse Century. We got to the SAG near where Del Valle splits off from Mines around Noon or so, so we climbed up the longish climb on Mines after most of the DMD field had gone through. There were some TnT triathlon folks out there too - you might have seen them.

We averaged close to 13.5 mph by the top of patterson, and that was taking it easy on the flats around livermore, and the speedy sections of Altamont.
Not bad for a tandem! I thought we would have finished sub 18-hours total time. I wrote to Scott late last night. We'll see if I hear anything. Otherwise, we will have to wait until next year to complete our DMD.

Good job to everyone who finished - and big thanks to jonathanb for riding up Mines with me. I tried my second DMD, but it just wasn't in the cards for me. I think having completed the ride 2 years ago (the wicked hot year) and knowing in such detail exactly what I had ahead of me was more of a hindrance than a help. My head just was not in it this year.
Thanks to V and Thom for sagging me in (I stopped just below their Hamilton water stop). all in all a fun day - and thanks to jonathan and friends, I went a lot farther than I otherwise might have considered given how crummy I felt, mentally and physically.
You have to be 100% for this ride, both mentally and physically.

Wait, let me get this straight...you were a VOLUNTEER at a rest stop and someone was an ass? That is completely and utterly ridiculous! That someone should be named and publicly humiliated and ask to never return.
