NEW YORK (AP) -- Elisabeth Hasselbeck says she feels fine after trying to hail a cab from a Manhattan sidewalk and getting hit by a bike instead.

The pregnant co-host of ABC's "The View'' joked about the hit-and-run incident on Wednesday's show, noting that whatever the speeding courier was carrying, it must have been delivered on time.

She told viewers that afterward, she sent a reassuring message from her phone to her husband, former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck. Then she posted an update on the Twitter Web site to announce: "The belly is OK.''

What are the chances that 2 idiots are in the same place at the same time in New York?

Slightly better than the chances that two New Yorker's will pull their heads out of their asses long enough to take note of who or what is around them.

Then again, who knows. Wasn't there to see the situation.

Why would anyone ever follow Elisabeth Hasselbeck?

Bikes speeding by on the sidewalk......that SHOULD be the issue here. Mrs. Hasselbasck's "idiot" status is not what this is about:rolleyes:. A pregnant woman, hailing a cab from the sidewalk....where she is SUPPOSED to be, getting hit by a speeding bike messenger, who does not even stop is what the story is. You guys amaze me. Had this been a cabbie hitting a cyclist turning a corner or hitting him in the bike lane where HE is supposed to be, you guys would be up in arms, calling for armed insurrection. Since it is some daytime TV star whom you consider an "idiot, you joke about it. This is a pregnant woman...on the sidewalk...involved in a hit and run with some idiot on a sidewalk where he does not belong. I do not find that joke-worthy. You would want to have him castrated had Mrs. Hasselbeck been your wife:mad::rolleyes:.

I wonder if she was really on the sidewalk? I had to cut on the inside of 3 or 4 people this morning trying to hail a cab a full lane deep in the road.

rarely do I notice a person in Manhattan hailing a cab from the sidewalk. They are usually in the street.

BINGO! We have a winner!

She wasn't actually standing on the sidewalk! She was in the street like every other person hailing a cab in Manhattan. She was in the street, in moving traffic, in the way of a cyclist.

Anyway, I'm happy to read that her baby is okay but Hasselbeck is a complete idiot. :notamused:

[QUOTE=baj32161;8740627what the story is. :.[/QUOTE]

The only reason this is a story is who was hit.

trying to hail a cab from a Manhattan sidewalk

Can't be done.

I have seen messengers and delivery bikes in NYC do almost every asinine thing in traffic you can imagine... But I NEVER see them on the sidewalk.

And (as mentioned previously) I NEVER see anyone hail a cab from the sidewalk. They always walk out into the street and throw the hand out across your face.

I hope he at least lowered a shoulder so he didn't get a black eye from the sucker punch.

I do not know who Elizabeth Hasselbeck is nor what her tv show is about, but that is irrelevant. I live near Boston and when I am in-town, I see what bicycle couriers do and usually get away with. They give bicycle riders and riding a bad name. It is our responsibility, as riders, to judge accurately and not run into pedestrians!

So, you were there?

Maybe there is other news that states she was, infact in the street. The link provided says she was on the sidewalk.

Let's assume she was in the street. Does this justify being run over? I would say IF she stepped right in front of the bike, yeah, she's at fault. If she stepped in the road to hail the cab and 3 seconds later the biker runs into her, he is an idiot riding out of control. A NYC courier knows, as apparently some here do, that "nobody hails a cab from the sidewalk" so, if he was riding at a decent clip within 2 feet of the curb, he's a moron. Any of you would say the same thing about a cage hitting a biker in traffic.

The bottom line here is, unless you were there and witnessed exactly what happened, placing definite blame on anyone is idiotic.

Clearly you've never lived in NYC none the less hailed tons of cabs here. Bottom line here is that you don't know what you're talking about: Hailing cabs from the SIDEWALK can't be done. Let's see if you're bright enough to figure out why that's almost physically impossible.

Nobody hails a cab from the sidewalk because there'll be at least five people standing several feet off the curb who will grab the cab before you can get near it!

You are correct. Never lived there and I doubt I ever will. But, I have been there quite a few times. I think I have hailed a cab once. Generally no need with the excellent subway system.

As I said, it is unclear whether she was in the street. The statement that it is impossible to hail a cab there from the curb is bull. It depends on where she is and how many people are around her at that moment also looking for a cab. I would agree that it is unlikely that you can hail a cab in midtown at that time of day from the curb.

So, by your statement, the road edges all over manhattan are clogged with peds waving down cabs.

This being the case, if you are a cyclist riding along this mob and you hit one, there is a pretty good chance that you atleast share in the blame as you are not riding with much situational awareness. If I ever get some sort of death wish and decide to take up midtown manhattan cycling, I will not ride as close to the curb as I would have here in cowtown, ct. Actually, for the most part, we don't even have curbs.

As seems to often be the case on BF she is at fault because she doesn't have 2 wheels under her. In this case there is a double whammy. Not only is she wheeless (did I spell that right?) she also has the misfortune of espousing conservative views.

Messenger dude should have killed her as she is probably a terrorist.

Face it, bike messengers are a hazard, cocky, scary, and dangerous. With that said, having worked in NY for eleven years I think that if you're a pedestrian you have to keep your eyes open.

Stacy

Pedestrians keeping their eyes open seems to be optional as is looking for oncoming traffic. Truly amazing how many people cross major streets with their eyes either closed or looking down avoiding any kind of visual contact.

I was actually hit on Houston Street by some Sarah-Jessica-Parker-Wannabee, in high heels and fur, who felt it was necessary to strut through the middle lane, against traffic, trying to hail a cab. Maybe she didn't see me behind those oversized shopping bags she was waving trying to get the cabbie's attention. She was none too happy about coming in contact with 'some dirty bike.'

For every self absorbed pedestrian who claims to have been hit by a bike, sidewalk or not, there's probably an equal number of cyclists who have been hit by oblivious pedestrians.

So are the pedestrians, the taxicabs, the stroller moms, the dog walkers, the buses, the cops...
