I have been thinking about getting my girlfriend into mountain biking, and have been checking out some of the low end bikes. They all have these rapid fire shifters that seem to have the worlds biggest shifter pods. I have seen these in 7 speed and 8 speed, but what the heck are these things, when did they show up, and are they actually any good? They are easily 3" just the pod...

I have seen them and have used them, and I do not like em. I had put 7 speed shifter on an old bike of mine that I had passed onto my nephew because I took the xt shifter off that bike to put on one of my older bike that I had converted. You have to push a little harder for the shift on those and thats ok if you are just casual riding, but for a little more serious performance not really. Plus if you had to jump more than one gear on those shifters, they do not have that ability after the first three shift.
