If your Trek dealer also sells Gary Fisher then test ride an Advance or Wahoo. The geometery is different. You may like the way it rides better, or you may not.

Test ride everything in whatever your price range you have decided on. Do this at whatever stores you trust or are willing to do business with. Everybody pretty much uses the same parts brand isn't really relevant IMO. For $300-$400 the bikes are pretty much the same. Fishers have some cool paint jobs and they seem to have a some nicer components than the Trek for the same price which seems a little weird to me because they are the same company. I like the Fisher stuff. I think the Advance, Marlin and Tassajara are great buys in their respective price catagories. For about mid $400 range you can get a nice Specialized bike also. It is all a matter of personal taste.

Good luck.

a friend had a trek 4300, sold it for parts and ended up getting more then i paid for. god bless e-bay. go with something a lil more. for the same price you can get a better gary fisher or specialized. even tho gary fisher and trek owned by same people, gary fisher seems to have better value/bikes
