Road Bike Racing - trouble understanding my first race...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

my first race will feature all cats (1 - 5, masters, womens, and juniors) and according to the information sheet we are all supposed to start between 6:45 am and 6:50 am.
does this mean a mass start? isn't this going to be meyham? how do the race officals know who is in what cat? do i have to race within my own group - what if it gets all split up? someone told me i'm not supposed to jump across and ride with another categoy. lot's of questions, i know. i'm just having trouble visualizing how this is going to play out. on top of that - the number of laps are different for each category. thanks for any help.

I can't imagine they'll start all groups at once. That would be crazy.
Are you sure that all groups are starting at that time?

i'm doing the one on june 12th - but it says they are all the same format. note the start time. it seems crazy to me as well...so i hope i'm just reading it incorrectly. maybe i'll send them an email to make sure.

Welcome to WISport (http://www.wisport.org/)
Mass start where everyone goes from the gun at once. I've heard of some tremendous pile-ups occurring at these events.

I've never experienced something like that.
Can't say I ever want to.

the good old days...when we wore toe clips, not these (LOL) silly clipless pedals. And the bike and you rarely separated..
kinda like sprint cars without roll cages...
I think you can see what's left of the rider on the lower bike (lol) just at the edge of the photo...
man those were some bad wrecks...makes me hurt just looking at this picture.

No. I did all the series last year as a cat 5. They just have a minute time gap between fields.
