Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - ok so i know it's been covered but...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

bottom brackets. eveyone says big ups to the cheep ones so i was thinking aboout a un73 but lbs said it wouldn't fit a sugino arm but i've heard elsewhere it would. should i just shell out for a phil or keep it cheep and get a sugino cup and cone?

What they probably meant is that the length of the spindle is not 109. Un73 is 110 which is the closest
to the 109 for the Sugino Track crank arm. If you get Phil the mounting rings allow you to position the bb exactly where you want it and as Phil has 108 that will be necessary. If you are not going to ride in the rain then by all means get the Sugino bb cup and cone. I would suggest the Superlap version which has mirror polished raced which have been unavailable from any other mfgr (Campy) for many years. Not that much over the cost of a standard Sugino bb either. Many Track racers use and swear by the Sugino at the international competition level.

would that 1 mm really make a big difference because that's what i'm thinking of getting as well?

I mis-typed the un73 width is 111mm not 110mm that makes it 2mm. If you want a truly straight chain line then it does matter. If you don't care about excess wear and possible derailment then it doesn't matter.

k, i see what you're saying, but on the harris cyclery site ( http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/bottombrackets.html ) you can specify 109mm for the shimano un53 and un73 BBs. is this inaccurate?

I stand corrected. They appear to be available from Harris. I have bought mine from Lickton and they don't show that size as being available. You learn something every day. I would go ahead and get the 109 and be happy and up and running in no time.

all right well keeping with the bb theme here i have a couple options. have my builder make a higher bb for 170's or keep it all track like and get the normal bb with 165's?

You're going to need a standard 12874 lift pipe for velodrome compliancy as far as BB height increase goes.
