The semi annual helmet thread got me thinking about other safety issues, like signalling.

This probably should be a poll, but until the moderators do so, I'll ask opinion anyway, how often do you signal your intentions:

1) Always, without fail
2) Most of the time
3) When I think of it
4) Only when there is other traffic around
5) Only when the constabulary is watching :D
6) Never, people can just read my mind
7) Your supposed to signal

I usually ride on streets with minimal traffic (read as none) at 4:45 a.m. and I do NOT signal during those times. If I am riding and there is traffic anywhere near me, I signal.

"Most of the time" for me.

Regarding Choice #4- I can dodge other people if I see them. Signals are for people I don't see.

#4 I live in a pretty thin traffic area. I signal when it is in my best interest for someone else to know what I am getting ready to do.

I used to signal my turns but then figured out it was much safer (for me) to have both hands on the handle bar at all times on the road.

I do look over my should quite a bit to make sure I'm clear before changing lanes. :D

Since I've gotten a roadie, I find myself pretty agressive on the road and I signal ALL THE TIME! I get to where I just assume that there are other folks around me.

Always! I usually have Gina on my wheel. When I'm alone, I'm never sure if there is a sucker or not. In traffic, for my own safety.

In a car - always.

On the bike - only if there is someone to see it.

Why take your hands of the bars if there is no one to inform?

#7 for me, where we live not even the cars signal... Horses haven't learned what a signal is for, and no one else believes them. Since our nearest traffic light is around 50 kilometers away (I kid you not) you get out of practice.

Everyone assumes everyone else will do anything at any time. We have more than a few farmers who rarely go to town and never get out of second. There have been times in town that I was the fastest thing moving through it, on my bike. and not because of traffic either.

If there is a car around to see me, always. My morning commute starts at 330, so not much traffic, except the last few drunks of the night and they don't see anything anyway. I would rather keep both hands on the bar if I can.

#4... if in light traffic....

#6... if in heavy traffic... cant imagine taking my hand of the handle bar during downtown stop and go traffic, plus pedestrians, and then other cyclists... besides why tell them where i'm going, if i'm already moving faster then them?

My own response, which I am sure those of you who replied are wondering, would be #2
