What is the status of Schueren? Is it still closed? Can I walk my bike over the construction area?

3 weeks ago we rode through. It was soft in places, but no big deal. 2 weeks ago they were working on Saturday so no way to get by. Last week I hear they weren't working. So you won't know until you get there.

I was up there a couple of weeks ago, and overheard the supervisor talking on his phone, asking for more dirt moving capacity. I couldn't tell if he was asking for help in getting it out, or in bringing it in. I think the projects is dragging on, and likely to take longer than planned. Early on, you couold get by, but if they're working when you get there, I'd guess it's be alot more difficult.

I plan on avoiding any route that needs to include that stretch of road for some time. Fortunately, there's lots of climbing options in those mtns. :D

I wanted to go to Angeles Crest today but ended up in the SMs again and we went up Fernwood. No crews were working on Schuren and you could have gone through, but we went down Stunt.

That's so funny, John- I usually ride in the SM's, but today we went up Angeles Crest with a group prepping for Breathless Agony. Upside down world, today!

It was nice up there, I don't get up there very often. Weather was a tad warm, but comfie enough, and the descent back into La Canada was wicked! The last (and only) time I had ridden up there was with PU's Angeles Crest Century last October, and that time it rained most of the day. It sure is beautiful country...

I went up Fernwood to Saddle Peak today and took a pic of the Schuren construction to date. I also overheard from a local why the work is being done. Years ago the roadway that runs up Schuren and continues on to Fernwood was 20 feet closer to the ocean, but a heavy rain caused the hillside to fall and took a large portion of the road with it. They rebuilt some 20 feet inland, but additional erosion is beginning to take it's toll on that rebuilt road. So they're rebuilding the hillside below the road with drainage piping layered in.

As you can see, they are making considerable progress, with 2 layers already in place and a third well on it's way. The Schuren section is still covered with dirt, but cars and trucks are able to travel over top.

I was thinking of going up to Saddle Peak tomorrow. Anyone know if this section is at least walkable?

Two weeks ago when I was last up there it was passable. My guess is it's the same now.

This was yesterday. Open but gravel.

Yep, made it up there today. Easily rideable by bike. There are signs everywhere saying it's closed, but that's not stopping most cars.

What's status now?

That Schueren section is all done. They are now doing a similar job just east of that intersection (the beginning of Saddle Peak Rd). It was still easily passable by bike this past Saturday.

Yup, Schueren from Piuma/Rambla Pacifico to Stunt was finished as of about a week ago, with the east side (Saddle Peak Rd) still technically closed. Progress is progressing, and riding through should be no problem as it is all paved in the open section now.
