Hi,

I'd like to introduce road biking to my bro-in-law (52) who lives in TO. He had some sort of triple balloon implant on his heart about two years ago. Shortly thereafter, he was hot to trot to the gym 6 or 7 days a week and he looked great. Didn't last too long I guess.

We were just up there for Easter and he' seems to be back to his old ways - heavy diet, drink and moderate exercise. He owns a good mtn bike but I'd like to introduce him to r/b as I said. I have two and I'm sure he'd fit one of them.

I just want to show him an easy option to help him live longer...

Anyone know of decent cycling routes from the Lawrence Park area? I've looked at Google maps and the ravine is close. I don't know anything about it. If it required a ride out of town to get him to experience the thrill then recommendations about that would be welcome as well.

I owe him anyways. I just discovered that the bottle of scotch I finished at his place is $125 a bottle! :p

This is an online version of the official Toronto bike routes map (http://www.toronto.ca/cycling/map/index.htm) -- you can pick up the paper version at parks centers, libraries and city hall. You can find some options there.

There is a road that leads into the ravine at the back of Sunnybrook. The path there will lead you right down to the lake (there is a pedestrian bridge over the rail tracks.) I usually follow it down to Cherry beach then across to waterfront to the beaches where I go up Victoria Park and down into Taylor Creek which leads back up to Sunnybrook.
It's Something like 35 to 40k ride. The only traffic is along VicPark and sometimes down near Cherry. Saturday and Sundays (midday and evenings) are pretty busy but during the week the path is pretty clear.

The road btw is Broadway Avenue (I live on Broadway). I am guessing 40k is more likely ( it is 30k round trip for me to the lake)

I recommend he head over to nearby Sunnybrook Hospital. On the north side he can glide down the hill and join the bike path system going all the way to Lake Ontario without any traffic. At Lake Ontario (Cherry Beach) choices of Leslie Street Spit, east along the boardwalk, west as far as want.
