Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Computer help ?

I am just starting out and was wondering what differences there are in computers. I was told that this Shimano model would be nice but being a newby I have no clue. Any help would be great.

They are a little more difficult to install than the average computer. My riding buddies were always turning them off accidentally during rides. You can solve this problem by hollowing out a piece of foam and forming it around the button. Make it just high enough that it takes a firm push but not too high that you cannot operate the button.

IMHO Shimano is a generation behind the competition and desperately needs to upgrade the Flight Deck. 2.4 GHz, more features, downloadable date, etc.

I would suggest that you start with a Planet Bike computer, quality is good and price is right. Basic computer but good enough to start with and give yourself some time to think about what you really want. Just Google Planet Bike they have a lot of good introductory equipment.

There are a number of popular brands that make entry level computers - CatEye and Sigma Sport, in addition to those already mentioned. Manuals and specs are all online. If you're just starting out, look at how easy it is to understand the instructions, how easy mounting will be, how easy it will be to display the relevant data while riding. Planet Bike seems to require that the magnet be much closer to the sensor than the others, which is a disadvantage.

Without starting a new thread I thought I would ask this question as well. I was wondering how many cyclist listen to music while they ride? I was also wondering if I could rigg up my Iphone so I could listen to my music while riding? I have know idea what other riders are doing as I don't ride with anyone as of yet. Once again thanks and any help is great.

No need to start a new thread, there are already plenty, though they often spend more time debating the safety or quality and not getting into specific suggestions.

Try searching for MP3 or music.

Go with a sigma sports computer. They have online demos that actually let you see the computer run and you can even program it. I would suggest you get a wired model.

As for MP3... Just stick with your I-Phone. Put it in your Jersey pocket. Create a playlist specifically for cycling workouts, you can even set the music up in a way that aids doing interval training. I would not use the expensive ear buds though. You are going to sweat and you don't want to clog the good ones with the microphone in them. Just get a cheap set for workouts. Personally I like the over the ear types vs the in ear types. I like to be able to hear things that are around me. If you dont want to use your I-phone... Look at the sansa clip.
