im looking to buy a pair of fire XC tires at my LBS and i am aware of the 66 vs 127 tpi tire... how can i tell the difference between the two since there are no markings that say so?

If you go to REI.com, you can look at the way the white lettering on the side of the tire cheap one is different than on the expensive one.

hmm... the only difference i can find between the 4 provided on the REI.com site is the cheap one ($32) has a larger font whereas the expensive one ($48) has smaller font... is that what you meant?

The 127 is the 580 gram tire, more TPI = less rubber= lighter.
the 60 TPI has less TPI= more rubber= more weight.
If you can get your hands on them, you can tell the difference in the suppleness of the sidewall. The 127 is more supple than the 60. the 60 has a tougher sidewall so it's more resistant to tears and cuts. IIRC the 60 is a 620 gram tire
