I just bought two trikes of the local CL for $100. That's $100 for BOTH!! :thumb:

Well I think it was a good deal anyhow. So now I have two "new to me" bikes, or should I say trikes, to research and overhaul. The first is a smaller Murray (24" wheels? Haven't measured yet) with the moniker "Senior Ride" on the chainguard (or soemthing like that, the xact name escapes me). It's kind of bronzey-brown and appears to have a 3-speed internal hub, but the shifter denotes High, Nuetral, and Low(?!!). It's dark now, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to go over them in any great detail- like if it's a Sturmey or a Shimano hub for example. I know Murray was/is kind of low end, but I'd really like to know something more about it if possible.

The other rasberry purple bike was listed incorrectly as a Johanu, but actually appears to be a Sun "Joannau" or something like that. It is a two chained single speed, which is kind of a shame really. It's in better shape than the Murray and is lighter. A couple of speeds on this thing and it might not be a total brick to ride/pedal (each bike is fairly heavy). Anyway, the Joannau is a "Deluxe", not that it particularly means anything to me since I know nothing of the brand or the history of this model. It does have a rather conspicuous and easily read searial number at the top of the seat tube. Maybe someone knows for serial decoder for vintage Sun trikes? Any info at all will be greatly appreciated.

Now to go over them and get them back up to riding shape. The tires are rotted, the inner tubes are most likely original and therefore are past their prime. Aside from that and a good cleaning/greasing/rust removal, both appear to be in decent shape. I had to drive 45 minutes each way (out to rural Indiana), but for the price and the condition, I'm happy. These will be going to the wife's Grandmother and my Grandmother once they are finished. The hope is they'll ellicit an urge to exercise and get out a bit more.

There's a "G. Joannou Cycle Company" that owns the Jamis brand...

Probably not related in any way, but the "Joannau" you mentioned reminded me of it.

You can make the single speed easy to pedal with low gearing. A smaller cain ring is the easiest way to do it. Top speed on a trike is not very important.

I'm heading down to the Lake this weekend (Lake Cumberland in Burnside KY), but before I leave I'll try and post a few detailed pictures. Given the size of the Murray, and it's current state or neglect, I may steal the trike portion off the frame (it appears to be a bolt on) and attach it to the end of a restored 70's tandem I have. This way not only can the wife's Grandma ride, but also her Grandpa who is legally blind. Pretty cool.... ;)

The trike may indeed have 24" wheels. If it does, that will lower the back of the tandem. This will bring the pedals closer to the ground. If one wheel of the tandem trike goes into a low spot (it does happen) you may have pedal strike. My trike has short 140 mm cranks. If this happens you may be able to just use one of the trike cranks on the tandem. Most trikes have a weight limit. That trike rear frame may not be strong enough for a heavy tandem and two heavy riders. Trikes are different and have different weight ratings. There are example of this on the interwebz.
