Looking for a new road bike on the internet is frustrating. So many great bikes, so few i can get my hands (& butt) on.
I can go try a Felt F45 tomorrow, about 65 miles away. It is a 56cm. I think they are compact geometry?
The frame geometry appears very close to a Specialized Allez Elite that I had fit at a shop in a 56cm and it has the sloping top tube. The "expert" at the shop says that it was a good fit. The top tube effective length is about 5mm shorter on the F45, but chainstay is 5mm longer.
I was looking for a F50, but they have one F45 and F70,80,90.
I have heard mention that Felt are often set up for tri bikes. Why is that? If the geometry is so close to the Allez, that is supposed to be just a good entry road bike? And if it is, is that bad? I am not sure. I may someday do a small triathalon, but really just want a great road bike that fits me correctly, is light, strong, rides good and will work correctly and last a long time.
The price I think is about $1700. Is that good? Should I bargain for some new pedals or maybe some new shorts? My PI shorts are making a bad spot on my sit spot! That's a lot of $, but I hope it would be worth it in the long run.

$1700 for this bike: www.feltusa.com/2004_bikes/f45.html - sounds like a fine deal given Felt's frame reputation and the mix of components. Is it a new '04 or older?

I don't know if it is a 04 or not. I guess I will find out today. I will check the specs against what 04 has also. If it is a leftover 03, maybe I can make a deal? Provided it is the bike for me.

The most important thing is to get fit to the bike the first few times you buy a bike. There is nothing like a bike that fite you right vs one you eyeballed off the local wally world. JMO

The 45 is a fine bike, I rode one recently. It wasn't for me though, just a bit too much transfer of road buzz compared to what I was looking for. Nice, fast, light bike.

The only differences between the 50 and 45 are the double or triple rings up front I believe.

I think what people are thinking about is that Felt used to make only Tri bikes. They've since expanded into a full road line with Tri, TT, Track and CX bikes. The pro Colavita team rides Felt now. These bikes are a great deal, well made and well priced.

I bought the F45 about a month ago. I could not be happier. I tried a bunch of bikes in this price range and this one just felt the best. The Ultegra/Dura-Ace combination has been great.
I was riding a Giant OCR 3 previously and was very happy with the upgrade.
