Northeast - Noob looking for advice and LBS in Northern NJ

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First, greetings and my apologies if a similar thread exists (didn't have much luck searching), as well as if this first post seems a little long winded. Keep in mind I know NOTHING about cycling.

I'm (heavily) considering getting into cycling, for improving my health and fitness, as well as commuting to work. I work less than 2 miles from home, riding a bike to work just seems logical. I also spoke to my boss about it, and bringing the bike inside the building for safe keeping is not a problem. This would have changed my mind completely.

I'm looking for a friendly LBS, preferably in the Bergen / Passaic County area for purchasing my first bike. I wouldn't mind going out the area for the purchase, but I am going to need a LBS for maintenance, and would prefer starting that "relationship" with the LBS I got the bike from. Yes, I'm overweight, about 5'8" tall and 245 lbs., so a bike shop that isn't going to make me feel out place, or like I don't belong there, is a huge plus.

And... while I should make a separate post for the following question, probably in the clydes forum, would a Trek 7.2 or 7.3 FX (fell in Love at first sight) make a good beginner/novice bike for someone my size. If not, what are my options in that price range.

Take a ride to parsippany cycle craft is a large top notch shop very smart helpful people. You can also go to the large staor in paramus campmor on rt 17n....they have stuff but not a dedicated bike shop. They do have nice stuff..

Good luck

Campmor

Overpriced, just go to a dedicated shop. You'll get better service, especially if you are looking to form a relationship, at a LBS

Don't go to cyclecraft. Go to Bicycle Tech in Lincoln Park. Cool shop, trek dealer, nice employees. Get a road bike, not a hybrid.

Thanks for the assistance. Bicycle Tech in Lincoln Park would be the closest LBS to me from your suggestions. So hopefully around the beginning of May I'll be treating myself to an early birthday present.
