I got up this morning, ate a PBJ,Banana, and a grape juice then hit the road with no real destination in mind. I had good parts of the trip and bad parts.
Good-I made it up each and every hill even though I felt like giving up on several.
Bad- They weren't big hills and I was barely going fast enough to stay upright.

Good-I'm finding that I really like my new bike.
Bad- country roads around here are made out of stone with some cement thrown in to hold it together, and is not real comfortable to ride on. Average speed bad roads 9.5 or so. Average speed well paved roads about 14.

Good-I didn't stop for anything more than stoplights until I stopped to talk to a friend at about 17.5 miles.
Real Bad- While standing there talking to her my type 2 Diabetes reared it's ugly head and my sugar apparently crashed. According to her I went ghost white, and I know that I could barely keep my balance standing there straddling my bike and I sort of zoned out. that was a first for me. After a glass of juice I was good enough to get the last 2.5 miles home though.

All in all Jerry's got a lot of work to do.

Yep, fair play to you. Its all mileage and you did well. About your sugar low, happened me too one day and I nearly died (exaggeration). I just felt so drained but I had to get home and to top it off I had no water either. Always keep a bar of something in case of emergency in your pocket:)

If your going to ride watch when you take your meds ! Keep riding and you may not even need the meds . When I first started back riding I had type 2 and had to stop one a the pills I was taking or I bonked out on every ride !

That's my goal. I want off of the pills. This is a chance to fix myself. Today was my longest ride since diagnosed with type II. Now I need to figure out how to eat so that it doesn't happen again. And I think that I need to make sure that I keep something extra to eat with me.

Carry your Blood Glucose Monitor with you on a few rides, every 5 miles, you stop and check it, to see how it affects the numbers, also carry some food that causes your sugar to ramp up, if you see the number getting low, then you can eat to bring it back into the normal range. After a few rides like this, you will start to know how it affects your sugar, and you can eat to keep from bonking just like anyone else.

With my crazy schedule I am NOT getting much riding time in. A couple of hours every weekend is it so far. Today (4-26-09) I went out again and did almost 16 miles. This time I made sure that I ate well before hand, and that it would do a better job of lasting through the ride by being more substantial. I still felt a little light headed by time I came home, but I had a energy bar with me for emergencies. As I said today was 15.5 miles in 1:21 at 11.6 MPH average. I only maxed out at 20 MPH but then I didn't dive bomb down a large(ish) hill today. My route was out and back and I made a classic mistake, the out leg was fun because of a 15 mph tailwind so I expended quite a bit if energy there, and left little for my return trip. I need to get out more during the week, even if it's only a few miles. Well that's my latest for anyone who's interested. I hope to continue to improve. I still want a century this fall.

I think that diabetics have a sugar crash rather then a bonk, under similar circumstances. That is something you need to learn to detect and keep something handy that will cause a good sugar recovery. Juices like Apple or Orange which are high in sugar should be good for this. Apple is probably better then orange if it's warm out though.

I rode home from work tonight. I felt really good and the only problems I had this ride was that I have either allergies or sinus issues that are now trying to drown me in snot, and causing me to cough non-stop over the last 2 hours. I put a bottle of Gatorade in my water bottle this trip and it seemed to do the job as far as staving off a sugar crash. It was my best ride yet. 17.57 miles, 1:16:11, Average speed of 13.8 MPH. I am getting better.

I ended up off all my diabetic meds right after I passed the 100 # loss I was on insulin and 2 1000 mg Metformin a day and 4 Glyburide a day !! Now I take nothing for it so I guess I am controling it with diet and riding :O) . Glyburide will cause you to crash if you sudenly start excersing. IMHO if you keep up the weight loss and ride regular you or anyone with type 2 can get off most if not ALL the meds .
