Tandem Cycling - Finally, No Flats!
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Finally, after 7 bike rides I have finally made it thru today without a flat. Now before everyone offers suggestions, this is with two different bikes, tubular and clincher, and 4 different brands of tires. I was thinking I should get out of the biking hobby. I might be getting even with only 3 flats in my lifetime before this run of bad luck. My wife even suggested that I buy new wheels [and she never wants me to spend any money on my bike/tandem].

Have had hundreds of flats in 34+ years of riding TWOgether.
Hey, stuff happens!
We run a rest stop at a local cycle tour, and last year it was raining  There were so many flats we ran out of tubes. My theory is that heavy rain washes the crap further into the road where most cyclists roll, just my thorey:rolleyes: So folks think the water softens the rubber, I don't know about that.
Have you had a lot of heavy rain recently?

When flats come, they come not single spies
But in battalions.

For whatever reason, they seem to "run in packs" with me as well. Maybe time to replace tires. Check your rim strips, everything you can think of to rule out causes. If you've been riding in wet weather, it wouldn't surprise me to get that many. That wet stuff sticks to the tires long enough to start getting ground in.

Buy the wheels you fool.
I'd be thinking Rolf Primas, Topolina, Sweet Sixteens (depending on your spacing), or perhaps some Zipp 808's laced to a tandem hub.
If you let this opportunity, you'll need to turn in your ManCard.
