It seems the universe did not want us to even go on this ride, nor finish it. However, despite all odds we overcame many of obstacles, but in the end it was not meant to be today :(

Let me explain...

Yesterday
1) This was supposed to be our day of bike preparations and making sure everything was ready. However, unexpected family stuff pushed it to the evening.
2) I bought a new saddle during the day since the old one bothered me on the last two 100+ mile training rides. However when I went to install it later on it didn't fit on my seatpost since the head of the post was too large to fit.... However we had another seatpost that worked... Problem Solved
3) After fixing up the bike, we noticed the rear tire was shredded bad, no way it would go 200 mi... OK so I said I will install one of my new Pro3 race 700x23 on the front and move the front tire to the rear. Well I pinched 2 tubes trying to get that damn Pro3 on the wider tandem rim, but it was not happening.... So what to do.... I said F' it let's use the wheel from my solo (20 bladed spoke 1-cross aero wheel)... Not ideal, but... Problem Solved
4) Had to readjust the brakes to the skinnier front rim.
5) After all that I we got to bed much too late, and only got 3.5 hours of sleep

This Morning
1) Despite the lack of sleep, we woke up OK and left on-time.. so far so good :thumb:
2) We get to the 880/238/580 interchange and the ramps are closed! Then I got lost in San Leandro and was running late now :( However we found the 580 and made it there just in time to register and get ready for the meeting. :thumb:

The Ride
We were VERY happy with how things were going. I had a different wheel, but it was working great, got through the crap last night, made it there on time despite the ramp closure. Now we were on the ride and pushing a very nice pace. We made it to the top of Diablo pretty quick, and the bike descended fine. We felt great! It was really awesome. Then came Morgan Terr. We pushed a nice pace up through there and even caught up to Ramon at the rest stop at the top of Morgan! We were only running around 15 mins behind him

Then came the plunge, which should have been one of the best parts of this ride. We are flying down, and suddenly the bike feels squirrely. I am like WTF, then I feel the steering and it is barely moving, almost stuck. Turns out the headset that we tightened last week, was totally jacked. I could barely move the bars  WTF!

So we decided we would keep going through livermore, but it got worse. I was literally busting my ass and focusing a ton on concentration just to go in a straight line. So we stopped and called sag to bring tools. A SAG person came, but no suitable wrenches. We pressed on, despite the fact this was killing me, it was very hard to keep the bike straight. So we spotted a mechanic shop as we passed through and intersection. I asked it we could borrow wrenches, and they let us. I loosened the headset to what seemed to be better, and we pressed on. But... it just got worse again. I fought it al the way over Altamont Pass, and then at the start of Patterson Pass it was just unbearable. I could barely drink water, because if I took one hand off the bar, the bike would almost fall over! So we called sag again... This time the guy was smart, and had wrenches. We loosened it up quite a bit, basically determining the headset was already trash, we just need to loose enough to steer and finish the ride. We wanted to finish so bad, and we both felt strong today, so we were determined.

We thought it would be OK.... wrong!!! The headset got stiff again... it just totally sucked. My hands and arms ached, I was worried about falling the whole time... At that point i was no longer motivated.... I told Ruth we would push up the pass to the water stop at mile 80 and we had no choice but to SAG it in :(

We were very disappointed, to say the least.

Then the SAG guy said, why don't you guys work the aide station at Sunol, and ask to ride the staff ride with us next weekend. He said we would still get credit for it since it was the full DMD. We went to Sunol, but they were overstaffed. We will see if they will still let us join next week.

If they don't let us, we will probably join some of you folks on Davis.

I'm pissed my mind is tired from all this crap... but my LEGS feel great, NOT even worn out! Damn...

We ended up with 80 miles with 8000 feet of climbing.

What a harrowing tail you guys! I'm glad to hear you made it to that point safely. S**t happens. We consider that you've done it in our book. There's next year with lessons learned and probably you'll have a new bike anyhow!
Glad you guys are safe...get some rest.

Sorry to hear that Marco and Ruth, glad you made it safely with all those mechanical issues.

Wow - that's a tough string of luck. Kudos to Ruth and you for making it as far as you did.

Wow. Only you would have even tried to press on.
Well told tale. I felt your pain.

Tough break guys.

There's no doubt in my mind that, if given another chance, you'll be able to pull this ride off. I'm rooting for you. :thumb:

Sometimes **** just ain't in the cards, I guess. That's some serious perseverance, though!

Good luck getting in on the staff ride tomorrow.

What a bummer. I rode out Mines Road around lunch time with some friends, and I was looking for you but figured you and Ramon were through there way earlier than that. Get that tandem fixed - we need something to draft on those fast rides!

Dang, too bad ... Sorry to hear that. Last time I did Davis, a guy broke his crank, and had similar problems, and couldn't find a replacement crank for his bike. So, they got him another bike, close to the same size. He rode the last 120 miles on a foreign bike. But I guess another tandem would be hard to come by.

So sorry, Marco & Ruth.

Far from an 'Epic Failure', although, wow, that was epic! I can't believe you battled time and time again with a messed up tandem!! Yes, most folks would have called it a day, much less fixing it to try again an again.

In any case, hope to see y'all ride in Davis!

Sorry to hear that you didn't finish, but I wouldn't think for a second that you aren't able to finish.

80 miles and 8000ft is more than most people ride in their lifetimes. You did and were probably home in time for lunch.

Mechanicals suck! Sorry how it turned out. :(

It was good to meet you on the way up Diablo. I was wondering when you'd be wizzing by. Hopefully they let you ride with the staff.

Sorry you didn't get to finish! But I'm sure you two will be back to conquer the DMD on another day.

It's nice to know what happened to you. There was only one tandem that rolled through our Rest Stop and it wasn't you. I was a little concerned.

Contact the ride organizer - Scott Halverson. Quackcyclists can be very accommodating. You could promise to volunteer for Knoxville. :D

Hmm... Maybe it IS time for that Calfee ... ;)

or a new headset I guess.

I'm just glad it didn't turn into a 10 degree list to port into a ditch.

We went to Sunol, but they were overstaffed.

The Sunol stop was overstaffed? Wow, that's cool. Kudos to all the volunteers. :)

Nice to hear you two are okay despite the mechanical problem. It could have turned ugly with the way you are fighting that darn headset.

do you guys ride a lot of double centuries?

Sorry to hear about your mechanical misfortune. To have a headset that basically fails sounds unpleasant and dangerous. You're going to have to get 'em next year.

Ahhhh...

A chance for redemption!

We agreed to volunteer at the Knoxville Double, and have been invited to join the DMD Staff Ride.

So Ruth & I will get our crack at DMD. New headset should be installed by Friday. I got a new tire, so the old wheel is ready to go.

Ride report this weekend!

Well it would be a late start for a ride in order to sync up with the tandem but....
Usual start at Kirk, elementary school. Up Ham and down other side, past bridge to last roller before the bridge. Back up Ham and follow up Sierra, return Felter, Calaveras, Piedmont, back to Kirk. 70-80 miles , 9k climbing.

Sometimes the rides write themselves.

M & R good luck again! I have to be in SF in the late afternoon so can't do the meet up ride. I might try the city loop I mentioned in the SB Mtn thread or head towards Mt Tam earlier in the day.

OMG......DAMN!!!

Just found our we broke the steerer tube on the tandem's fork... major suck!

Seeing how fast we can get a woundup... The only 1" tandem rated fork.

On the other hand... glad we never crashed and/or died on any of our descents.

04-22-09, 03:56 PM
That would explain the "headset" issue then.

It's good that you found out the exact nature of the problem with the bike on a workstand and not on the road.

BlastRadius
04-22-09, 03:59 PM
Crap. Thank goodness you didn't crash.
How about a custom fork from Bernie Mikkelsen? Bet he can make on for you pretty quickly.
At least you can upgrade to threadless now.

Cripes. The two of you barely weigh one big guy, yet you're ripping this bike apart at the seams. Real, ultimate power!

Maybe it's time to stop dumping money into that tandem, and give Steve Rex a call after DMD2. :P

We are getting a new tandem, but it's arrival date is scheduled for the end of June... that might deserve a new thread.

Wound Up would be 2-weeks and expensive..

Turns out Santana has some NOS heavier-than-lead 1" Chrome steel tandem forks.

Should be here by Friday.

FWIW, we also weigh a combined 300 lb... That would be a really big guy.

I was actually surprised that you continued onto Hicks after we came down Bohlman and On Orbit. I remember seeing you futz with it at Summit Bicycles.

The mechanic was shocked that you guys did Bohlman/On Orbit on the tandem.
