Back at the beginning of the year, there was a thread about New Years Goals. In step with my non-conformity, I posted that my goal this year to ride without concern for speed, distance, averages, or any of the competitive components of bike as a race to some end, but to meander more without a specific goal in mind. I find when I do this, I have one of those grins on my face that has to be wiped off, but always returns.

A couple weeks ago, I posted a goal of riding 32 miles to procure a plate of Biscuits & Gravy. That was a great ride with grinning results. Yesterday, I decided to repeat the ride and breaking away from my goals to not be competitive (with myself) I took the ride stats (yes, i do keep ride stats from the computer, but really only as a log for memories) and tried to out do my previous ride. It was miserable. The headwind didn't help, but beyond that I was so focused on outcome of the ride that I hated every second of it.

Anyway, I have been watching a thread on a 29r forum that I frequent and it reminded me of my goals, or lack thereof that makes cycling fun for me. I can really appreciate this guys post. I think you can view the post, just not his pics without signing up.

Thanks for sharing Jay.

I remeber that thread. I think I was just going to ride, to ride. Yea right! I've been logging how long it takes me to change a flat or air up the tires! Wanting to beat the time everytime.

I just got a candence computer, Cat Eye Stranda, and I leave it on the candence mode and don't worry about my time or speed. But I've found out that as my candence gets better, so goes everything else.

I think I said I wasn't going be a "roadie snob" in that thread either, but here I am $1500 later with a road bike and wondering just how high does my fat ass needs to be to get low drag on the downhills and if my helmet is aero enough! I'm pittiful! Run me over the next time you see me!

I know, but I wish we had the trails to ride like other folks do. I hate have to load up bike and drive an hour to ride them. I like riding, not driving.

Its a long and exspensive story! Jay got his Peace 9er from our favorite LBS and I went in to get a bike. Wife agreed on a new bike because I was sticking to WW and working out regularly. I wanted more of a bike to ride on the road since we don't have allot of MTN trails close. I had a decent $500 bike picked out then Jay e-mails me a $750 bike that was what I wanted. When I got to the LBS, the $750 bike was gone. I didn't want to get a "pure" MTN bike, so I looked at the FRC2 from Giant (now at $900) and ALLOT of ther bikes. Two hours later and a check for $1050 (for a dfferent seat, tires, pedals and "gear") I ride out on my OCR2!

Got to say, I never had one second of buyers regret!

I still have my old Hard Rock for trails....but still looking also! I think a SS Peace 9er in going to join my stable next year, if they get a decent paint job! Maybe red, white, and blue?

HIJACKING HAS CEASED!

About the OP, it really sums up what riding should be about.
